मेरा एकजना अफ्रिकी साथीले मात्र भन्ने गर्थे- यी धनी देशकाहरुले हाम्रो नराम्रो खबरमात्र छाप्छन् । मलाई पनि हो जस्तो लाग्थ्यो । बिग्रेको, भत्केको अनि नाङ्-गा भोका देख्यो कि टुरिष्टले पनि फोटो खिचिहाल्छ । मलाई यो कुराले सँधै छुन्थ्यो । मनमनै सोच्थेँ म यिनीहरुको देशमा जान पाएँ भने माग्नेको मात्रै फोटो खिच्छु । यो मौका बल्ल अहिले पाएको छु । मन अलिकति भएपनि हलुंगो भएको छ । खासै भन्ने हो भने त मलाई अझ मज्जा लागेको छ धनी देशको दरिद्रताको फोटो खिच्न पाएर । पत्याउनु भएन ? तपाईँले सोच्नुभयो होला अमेरिकामा पनि गरिबी ? बिल गेट्सको देशमा पनि अभाव ? बिल गेटसको सम्पतिको त कुरै भएन, उसको बिल एण्ड मेलिण्डा गेट्स फाउण्डेशनको बजेट मात्रै पनि विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठनको बजेटभन्दा बढी छ । यस्तो देशमा गरिबी ? हो, त्यसैले त हाम्रा बुढापाकाहरुले भन्ने गरेका- बत्तीमुनि अँध्यारो ।
साँच्चै गरिबी छ त अमेरिकामा ? मलाई जान्न मन लाग्यो । अनि कम्प्यूटरमा गुगल चलाउन थालेँ । आम्मै, म त गजब ! हैन, संसारलाई थर्काउँदै मै हुँ भन्दै हिँडने देशमा नेपालभन्दा चार गुना बढी गरिब बस्दा रहेछन् । हाम्रो देशमा करिब ९० लाख जनता गरिबीको रेखामुनि बाँच्दछन् भनेको त अमेरिकामा त ३६० लाख जनता पो गरिबीको रेखामुनि रहेछन् । करिब ९६ लाख अमेरिकीले खान नपाएर कयौँ दिन भोकै सुत्नु पर्दो रहेछ । अब त मलाई म कुन देशमा आएछु जस्तो पो लाग्न थाल्यो !
मैले थाहा पाए अनुसार गरिबको धेरै ऋण हुन्छ । यता पनि ऋण, उता पनि ऋण, उसँग पनि ऋण, उहाँसँग पनि ऋण । गरिब त ऋणमा चुर्लुम्म डुबेको हुन्छ । हाम्रो देश पनि राजा रजौटा र नेताहरुले गर्दा ऋणमा डुबेर घाँटीसम्म आइपुगेको छ । अनि अमेरिका नि ? यो त झन् ऋणमा डुबेर ‘बचाउ-बचाउ’ पो गर्दै रहेछ । न्यूयोर्कको टाइम स्क्वायरमा रहेको नेशनल डेब्ट क्लक अनुसार डिसेम्बर १२, २००६ मा यो देशको ऋण ८६ खरब डलर रहेछ । आम्मामा … यत्रो ऋण ! प्रति परिवार ऋण ९६ हजार डलर हुँदो रहेछ । प्रत्येक दिन यो ऋण ९७ करोडका दरले बढ्दो रहेछ । (http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/)।
न्युयोर्कको टाइम स्क्वायरमा रहेको ‘राष्ट्रिय ऋण घडी’।
माथिका कुरा भए पढेका, जानेका र मैले बुझेका कुराहरु । अब म मेरा अनुभवहरु सुनाउँछु । म बिहान अफिस जाने बाटोमा एउटा पार्क आउँछ । यो गोलाकार पार्कमा रहेको बेन्चमा म सँधै कोही न कोही सुतिराखेको भेट्छु । बिचरा गरीब भएर त होला पार्कमा सुत्नु परेको, यस्तो बरफ जम्ने जाडोमा भन्ने मनमा लाग्छ ।
अर्को यस्तै दृश्य देखिन्छ लन्च आवरमा, हाम्रो अफिसमुनिको रेस्तुराँको ढोकामा सँधै एउटा माग्ने “आई एम हङ्ग्री सर” भनिराखेको हुन्छ । प्रत्येक दिन उ त्यहीँ हुन्छ ।
एउटा स्मार्ट माग्ने भने बरोबर अफिस छुटेपछि फुटपाथमा देखिन्छ। उ सुकिलो लुगा, सफा स्पोर्ट शू र कानमा एफएम भएको हेडफोन लगाएर संगीतको धूनमा मागिराखेको हुन्छ । उ मागेर खानुपर्ने जस्तो पटक्कै देखिँदैन । किन हो कुन्नि, उ मागिराखेकै हुन्छ । त्यही फुटपाथमा ।
अर्का एकजना माग्ने भने दयनीय अवस्थामा भेटिन्छ मेट्रो स्टेशननिर हेर्दै … … … । कहिलेकाहीँ म खानेकुरा, फलफूल उसलाई दिन्छु। हुनत म माग्नेलाई केही दिएर उसलाई सँधैका लागि माग्ने बनाउन चाहने ब्यक्ति त हैन, तैपनि कहिलेकाहीँ केही दिन मन लाग्छ । यस्ता अरु पनि भेटिन्छ माग्नेहरु तर मैले आजसम्म कुनै एसियनले मागेर हिँडेको देखेको छैन । यसमा मलाई अलि गर्व लाग्ने गर्छ । यहाँ केही नेपालमा गोरेहरुले खिच्ने जस्ता फोटोहरु राख्न पाउँदा मलाई रमाइलो लागेको छ, तपाईँलाई नि ?

The article “Poorest people of the richest country” is quite interesting, and more than that is the mixed reactions presented by many readers on the subject. However, I am not very impressed of the article because of the following main reasons:
1. First of all, the writer is trying to prove to the innocent nepalese that America has more beggars and homeless people than in Nepal. But the writer, probably doesn’t know how the poverty is defined in US. In US poverty is defined if a family’s total income is less than the family’s threshold, then that family and every individual in it is considered in poverty. Where as the definition of poverty in Nepal is completely different.
2. USA stands in 4th highest place in GDP per capita where as Nepal vertually has no position in GDP standings. Many people living in Rural Nepal (>25% of population) and some in Urban areas do not have even clothes to change when they wash the one they were wearing. They cannot afford even a two course of minimum quality food everyday. Where as this is far from true in USA.
Ask the writer, if his standard of living has improved or gone down since he has migrated to USA. Ask him why he has migrated to USA, for what reason, if he sees so much better in Nepal.
3. USA Government has the mandatory responsibility to take care of their citizens who are living below poverty level. Accordingly US has health, benefit and housing programs for those living below poverty. They have clean drinking water and fresh air to breath.
Ask the writer what Nepal Govenment has program to help those poors.
3. The writer perhaps has forgotten that a society is made up of various people such as rich and poor, wise and stupids, saints and thieves, youngsters and olds, man and woman. He cannot dream of homogeneous society that is having only rich, only wise, only youngs, etc.
So I would suggest the author to do more study and research before making comments on any topics in the future, not to make comments on the basis of observation. Probably the poor sleeping on the bench and beggars the writer saw in USA are the illegal immigrants, who were not qualified for the social benefits.

Beggars in America are also american. And, this country thinks that america is a single planet, and rest of the world is just a hell. I hate american attitude toward rest of the world, even if I stay here.
As for poverty, I think every country has had it. Rich countries dont publish it, poor countries publish it for just for begging money.

There is no doubt that if any body is aware about the right, he or she doesnt need to beg in the street of any western country.
I just wanted to point one thing which neither the writer nor the commentors have noticed…
There are undercover intelligence people (I dont mean to all) who stay in the city disguising as begger, but if you see whole they neither earn much nor they are worried about it, they just do their duty…I have encountered few of such undercovr people…
But I dont mean that all are undercover! Just making you aware!!

The only difference is we have more than 95% of population below poverty line and the US has less than 5% below poverty line (the numbers are just rough guesses).
One picture like above may represent a few such people in a town but one picture like this in Nepal may represent millions of people.
That is why our poverty is more visible than theirs.

Dear all,
The reality is that in USA only those people are beggars who are lazy to work, otherwise there is no problem of basic needs for anyone. Even for disables and jobless citizens US government provides money to fulfill basic requirements.
So the pictures presented here speaks the truth but thats their own choice not their fate like in Nepal.

Most of them have good experiance visiting Nepal.

Byas has opened interesting discussion about poverty in USA at a time when the country is the only superpower in the world. Since collapse of Soviet Union, there has been no other country that seems to somehow counterbalance American maneuvres.
Talking about poverty in America, coastal country sides including in Florida (Constitunt state of Mr. George Bush)is housed by millions of poor, mostly non-whites. I have never been to America, in fact I never thought about going to America. These are the pictures I have seen in some TV programmes. There was an impression that George Bush did not pay attention to Katrina hurricane and its possible aftermath mainly because the potential affectees were poor blacks.
I noticed varieties of comments about America, its economy and strength. But all its strength and prosperity is coming all from the sweat and efforts of outsiders, mainly the third world people. Indiginous Americans have long been displaced by the migrant Europeans and they have thoughtfully worked out strategy to use migrants from the third world as cheap labor. Such a strategy is also grossly promoted by other imperialistic powers, UK being in the head line throughout. There are many countries supporting America, in popular Nepali literature Chamach States, vigorously promote USA to become a clever dictator. For example, Nepal do not receive any substantial support from USA except for direct implementation projects in rural areas where 100s of Peace Corps volunteers (Americans) are employed or other education and projects under USAID. If USA assistance to Nepal is to compare with the other countries like India, China, Japan and Scandanavian counties with less economically prosperous country, the latter override the American inputs. But why our rulers, so called democrats are so much afraid of the Americans? Why Moriarty, a foregn diplomat, has the liberty to make comments about every event in Nepal, in fact delivers speeches with guiding principles on Nepal politics? Is it because, Moriarty genuinely cares / about /loves Nepal (a Nepali patriot?)! Not at all, it is just to reflect its imperialistic approach. If it is any other national, he would have been Persona-non-grata a long ago. It is all because of its economy, in fact. It is because of the strength of US Dollar. All over the world every one dreams of piling up USD (even not UK pound or Euro) because we are so used to. A question though, answer to which is not easy to find.
US Dollar is available everywhere in all countries so much so… How come it is so easily available to buy wolrdwide economy. Does America follow international principles while printing USD Notes? Does USA really store valuables equivalent to the currency bills in circulation (which would be trillion–trillions…)?

Rather than being happy to see the poverty in US, I’d like to take your article as an encouragement for Nepali people to stop criticizing what Nepal does not have, and how western world is so glamorous.
Almost everyone in Nepal, who hasn’t been to US likes to dream about what they can achieve in US. Yes people can achieve so much in US as it is “the land of oppurtunity”; however, “the land of oppurtunity” might be because you are willing to do any kind of labor to raise your status there, where as the same people are not willing to perform the kind of labor back home.
Further, your article points to me that if anyone doesn’t desire to achieve, they cannot in any part of the world(exception: mentally or physically disabled), whether they may be in “the land of oppurtunity”.

even I have seen so many ex american soldiers in Sanfrancisko who were handicaped by Vietnam war. They were with the play cards. One of them (who was standing with one leg) where he had written ” I am the victim of Vietnam war and that is not enough money(pension) to survive my family which provides government. so, If you have a heart please help me and my family”. He was shouting. onfortunately I had no change;just realized the policy of US government and regreting I couldn’t drop even a coin in his hand. being poor is not only the cause of laziness.

Please remember these things…
(1) Beggars/homeless in US are mainly because of their own laziness, not due to lack of work. When a Nepali arrives in US, he doesn’t bring his wealth from Nepal but brings his determination to work hard and excel. I have not seen a single beggar/homeless Nepali or any Asian.
(2) Poor people in US are poor in American standard. They still have TV, cars and AC in their homes.
(3) Its also true that if poor people from Nepal get chance to come to US, I believe each of them will rise above the poverty line even in American standard. So, if US really wants to help Nepal, DV should be allocated to poor Nepalese, not to the rich and elite.

This a reality, I have seen last time many people were asking some money. Nepali people are poor because there is no opportunity but in USA there is opportunity. Whoever are bragger in USA they are lazy people they don”nt want to do the work. If they do work they won’t need to do such things.USA is not a poor but some stupid people live in USA.

Dear Friends,
My office is just three minutes walk from White House in Washington DC. When I return from office at around 5 PM there are lots of people asking for “dollar”, “dime” and “nickel” in the subways. There is always a queue of beggers for a plate of food in a particular place where food is distributed to those people everyday.
So there are poor people everywhere in USA too. But In my opinion they have made begging their profession becoz if they want to work, I am sure they will get one. America is not heaven as we tend to think from Nepal. It is a place where people work 15 hours a day to manage their life.

we are poor indeed, asian countries and african countries are poor, its true, usa is rich country, its just fashion , i have seen some beggar in london as well but they seem doing that because they are lazy or something other reason. i was really shocked wen i visited scotland in november, it was damn cold, windy and rain, i saw one lady , young lady, on the street sitting down with one thin blanket, i have never seen female beggar in the uk before than that. it was really pity.

Poverty and Wealth In America
The small town of Taos sits at the northern edge of a long river valley that stretches north from Albuquerque, cutting through the high mountains of northern New Mexico. The town is dominated by Taos Mountain and the even more majestic Wheeler Peak, the highest point in the state. The Sangre de Cristo and Jemez mountains circle the horizon. To the south and west of town, the Rio Grande Gorge slices down 800 feet (244 meters) into the rocky desert scrub. These waters, which have cut through the highlands for millennia, continue south through the length of the state, before turning abruptly east to form the border between the United States and Mexico.
Something in the geography of the place, or if you believe the words of the local mystics, the call of the Mountain herself, seems to encourage contrasts in Taos. These contrasts exist both in the natural world, and in the human communities that have placed themselves in this isolated place. Perhaps nowhere else in the United States do extreme affluence and abject poverty exist in such close proximity, nor are the lessons of culture, race and wealth so easy to read.
The true extend of poverty in the United States is one of the country’s many unacknowledged truths. Moving from state to state, the examples are almost endless. The homeless fill the parks and public spaces of the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. The Hispanic population on the east side of Austin, Texas, home to Dell Computers and numerous other high tech companies, often dwell in homes with dirt floors and plywood walls. Beggars with hand-made cardboard signs reading “Please Help” stand at busy intersections or sit along downtown sidewalks in almost every urban area. Across the deep south, in the states that once formed the heart of the Confederacy and are now the core of the “conservative” Republican Party, communities of poor blacks continue to survive in dilapidated housing, working where and how they can in order to just get by. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the world had the opportunity to see the poverty and neglect that typify these communities.
One Side of Taos
New Mexico, though, and particularly northern New Mexico, shows poverty on an entirely different level. Per capita, the state itself is consistently one of the three poorest in the United States, and Taos, with only 32,000 residents, is one of the poorest counties within the state. Estimates of per capita income in Taos County range from $16,000 to $18,000. Almost 21 percent of the population, and almost 25 percent of those under 18, lives below the already low federal poverty level. These rates are nearly double the U.S. average, and sadly they are not the highest poverty rates in the state. Federal census data shows other New Mexico counties with poverty rates above 50 percent. Official unemployment stands at 5.8 percent, well above the national average of 4.5 percent. Even this number appears low to the locals, because federal statistics do not count those who have simply dropped out of the traditional economy.
The tell-tale signs that so often accompany poverty can be seen in the health profile of the county. Alcohol-related deaths account for 0.07 percent of all deaths in the county, as compared to a national average of 0.02 percent. Deaths from cirrhosis of the liver (often associated with alcoholism) and diabetes were twice the national average. Births to single mothers account for over 54 percent of all births in the county, while 20 percent of all babies are delivered by women, often girls, under the age of 19. The abuse of heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana are all too common. Rio Arriba county, which sits immediately to the south of Taos, has the highest rate of death by heroin overdose in the country.
The effects of poverty can also be seen in the field of education. While the state appears to spend more than the U.S. average on its students, these same students consistently rank at or near the very bottom of all measures of educational performance. For example, only 20 percent of the state’s fourth graders can read at a “proficient” level, placing the state in a tie for 48th place among the 50 U.S. states. In 2004-05, New Mexico placed dead last in a survey of “smartest” states. In 2006, the state had moved up slightly to number 43, but a recent report by Education Week placed New Mexico 50th on a “Chance for Success” scale. This means that the state is the worst in the nation at preparing its students for a meaningful career, or in fact, any career at all.
The combined effects of poverty and a lingering rural village lifestyle can be seen on every street in the town. Abandoned cars and refrigerators fill yards and side-streets. Trash flutters in the high desert winds, to be caught by tree branches and fenceposts. Outside the core of town, roads are rarely paved, and trailers, mobile homes or even tents serve as housing. Feral dogs roam the wilder neighborhoods. Entire sections of the county appear to be broken, crumbling, or simply rusting away.
The situation in Taos clearly shows that wealth and development are not the same thing. In the end, the absolute wealth of a country, or a town, may be almost irrelevant. It is the distribution of that wealth, the spread between the top and the bottom, and the existence of a functional, integrated middle class, that reflects true development. The problem with Taos is not that the poor are poor or that the rich are rich. The problem is that no force, either governmental or private, exists to moderate the excesses of the affluent or alleviate the worst depths of poverty.
The type of disparities in wealth seen in tiny Taos inhibit economic growth, decrease democratic participation in government, exacerbate racial and ethnic conflicts, and decrease the overall level of security for all members of the community. Yes, america is a capitalist country. There is a huge gap between the rich and the poor. But, I do not think there is any difficulty finding jobs paid on hourly basis. There may be compitition on salaried positions, but there should not be any problem finding hourly jobs for sincere and hard workers. As long as a person is willing to work (not lazy), I believe, even a high school drop-out can find plenty of jobs leading him or her into a normal way of living: small apartment with basic utilities and electronics.
Mr Byas has not seen any asian beggers, Why? The answer should throw some light.
My impression is that most ( I am not saying all) of the beggers are drug addict who either
1)cannot work physically because they ruined their health,
2)or, do not want to work,
3)or, cannot be hired because of their conduct.
Why they started drug at the first place is a whole different issue. My impression again is that this addiction is not because of the unemployment, but it is otherway around. Mr Byas must have seen beggers with a placard saying, “Why lie, I need a beer!”

Just to add on this, New York’s rent is getting so high that one million (10 lagh)people of the city have to choose between food or the rent…..

yes u right i have seen may homeless on thr street in DC area but i dont think those pictures represent the reality of US.those are the people of America who
doesnt like to work and out of social life.they drank a lot whatever they have money and sleep on the streets.thats right-MAGNE NAI KARMA BHAY PACHHI TAKASKO K LAGCHHA RA?Otherwise everybody can survive easily just working 20 hrs in a week.if the nation doesnt have job oppoutunites,why r they bringing the people from other countries.

Obsolutely you are right. You are in New York, New York’s weather is too cold in winter and too hot in summer so New York has not many homeless people. I am in San Francisco, California. If you come to this city, you will see how many homeless people in this city. San Francisco Mayor. Gavin Newsom welcomed all homeless people in this city. They have program to give them shelter and food to everyone, they used to provide cash this Mayor changed the rule. But interesting thing is, they don’t want to stay in shelter. They enjoy in streets, because they can not do drugs in shelter. Even they stay in shelter, they come out for their extra income for Beer or drugs so you see so many homeless people begging in streets.
San Francisco, California has wonderful weather, not too cold and not too hot, they can sleep anywhere they want and Mayor couraging to homeless people to come San Frnacisco. Someday, one of the beautifual city of United States, will be homeless city.

Money has no limit and rich is different thing and life god given gift is another thing. Comparing human life with physical things I think would not produce anything productive at all. Human by birth everyone is rich expect disabled ones. Thats what I think.
