अपडेटः यो पार्टीका मोरङ क्षेत्र नम्बर ३ का उम्मेदवार हरिकुमार बस्नेतलाई आज नेपाल डिफेन्स आर्मीका कार्यकर्ताहरुले अपहरण गरेका छन्। डिफेन्स आर्मी हिन्दु अधिराज्य कायम गर्न र राजालाई राख्न खोलिएको सशस्त्र समूह हो।
अनुमान लगाउनुस्, यो कुन स्थानको चित्र हो ?
अरु देशको हैन, हाम्रै नेपालको !
हाम्रो नेपालमा त उत्रिएर चिया पिएर फेरि दौडेर चढ्न पनि भ्याउने गरी ढिला कुदने जनकपुर-जयनगर रेल एउटा र काठमाडौँको भृकुटीमण्डपमा रहेको एउटा बालरेल मात्र छ भन्नुभएको ? यो भावी नेपालको चित्र रे क्या। अनि यो पूर्वपश्चिम रेलमार्गको दृश्य रे।
पूर्वपश्चिम रेलमार्गको स्वरुप यस्तो हुनेछ
काँकडभिट्टा-महेन्द्रनगर ८८ किमी
महेन्द्रनगर- गाईघाट ६० किमी
गाईघाट-बर्दिवास ८४ किमी
बर्दिवास-हेटौडा ११० किमी
हेटौडा-नारायणगढ ६७ किमी
नारायणगढ-बुटवल ९८ किमी
बुटवल-भालुवाङ ७५ किमी
भालुवाङ-कुसुम ६६ किमी
कुसुम-कोहलपुर ५० किमी
कोहलपुर-अत्तरिया १३५ किमी
अत्तरिया-महेन्द्रनगर ४० किमी
जम्मा ८७३ किमी
शाखा मार्गको कूल लम्बाई ५०० किमी
नक्सामा पूर्वपश्चिम रेलमार्ग यस्तो देखिने रहेछ-
देशभर यसरी रेलमार्गको विकास भए देशको सर्वोपरि आर्थिक वृद्धि तथा विकासमा योगदान पुग्छ। यसले क्षेत्रीय समुदायहरुबीच अन्तर्क्रिया गराई दुर्गम क्षेत्रको विकास गराउन मद्घत गर्दछ। रेलमार्गले यातायात मात्र नभएर देशमा प्रविधिको भूमिकालाई पनि प्रोत्साहित गर्नेछ। आउँदो १० वर्षभित्र पूर्वपश्चिम रेलमार्ग बनाउने अनि १५ वर्षभित्र शाखा मार्गहरु बनाइने रे।
यो चाहिँ राजधानीको फोटो रे। काठमाडौँ भन्ठान्नुभएको ? हैन। यो त नारायणगढ हो। नारायणगढ देशको केन्द्रमा रहेकोले नारायणगढलाई राजधानी प्रस्ताव गरिएको रे।
यो चाहिँ अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय विमानस्थल। अहँ अहँ, त्रिभुवन विमानस्थल हैन। यो त सिमरामा बनाइने नयाँ अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय विमानस्थल पो त।
मर्स्याङ्दी नदीको ताल
माथिल्लो कालिगण्डकीमा बग्गीको प्रयोग।
त्यति मात्र हैन, पोखराको सराङकोट, अन्नपूर्ण चौथो र माछापुच्छ्रेमा रज्जुमार्गको व्यवस्था।
मेलम्चीमा बढी समय लाग्ने भएकोले सुन्दरीजलमा बाँध बनाएर खानेपानी आपूर्ति गर्ने।
यी र यस्ता अनेक अरु कल्पना र प्रस्तावहरु।
तपाईँलाई गाईजात्राको कल्पना जस्तो लाग्यो कि ? हैन, यो त नेपाल राष्ट्रिय विकास पार्टीले जारी गरेको घोषणापत्रमा उल्लेख भएको विषय पो त। यो पार्टी जपानी मूलका नेपाली नागरिक ताकाशी मियाहाराले स्थापना गरेका हुन्। २० वर्षमा समुन्नत नेपाल बनाउने लक्ष्य यसले राखेको छ। मियाहारा आफैले ललितपुर क्षेत्र नम्बर २ बाट उम्मेदवारी दिने भनेका थिए। तर उनी उठेका छैनन्। यो पार्टीले १२ स्थानमा उठाएका उम्मेदवारहरुको सूचि तल राखिएको छ।

plan is good but than its true that nepal has been always laid far away from the implementation of these plans due to the hungry stomach and dirty politics around…Now its like the Politics Lab..who ever wants can come here and do practicals(dirty one)…india,china and america are already in..well japan too….Nepali U urself have to do something ..neither japanese nor American..U coz u have ur own identity..Nepali…..The young generation need to wake up fast ..we can do it…we dont need japanese or Americans

I thought we stopped shouting at each other because it was kind of irritating for other friends.They complained and I realized that they were absolutely right.
I really wanted to reach back to Hope ji about his theoretical use of the notion of hope, which is said to be integral to the ideology of Japanese and many other east Asian societies. Hope ji, had a theoretical basis of why he liked Miyahara’s plan based on the notion of ‘hope’, (he did not mention it, but I made sense out of his writing) which is now being explained by Barack Obama for the presidential candidate’s primaries in US. I wanted to continue to discuss with him particularly on this issue. Because, I thought it was academically interesting topic. But, I realized that other friends were sick and tired of seeing our blog IDs in this blog. So, I thought I must stop. which is why I did not respond to you even if you posted two clips after mine. That’s it.
You look like you enjoy babbling nonsense forever. You started teasing me, (look up there, I had written for others, not you, as you had not posted any comments yet until I posted my second comment under this title)and I obviously started using the shouting words first. You were the one who began to tease me by saying ‘you have diverted from the topic, and tried to be … and… be prepared to get what you have asked for’ Okay? You did not use any dirty words, the way you wrote was so disdainful and supercilious. My comment on others was to invoke them for the public discussion about that plan. Your comment on me was to tease me, to irritate me which is what I have found you doing elsewhere too.

Dear Koolhead,
I am really impressed by your answer. Ya, you are 100% correct, if you are talikng about short run and especially if you are talking in pretext of Nepal.
I was refering to long term development of Nepal.
If you know all those things from Inflation, Hyperinflation to Phillips Curve, I am pretty sure that you know why economists debate.
For example, some economists think that national debt of America (which has amounted to more than $9.4 trillion) is problematic; while other scholars argue that it isn’t a problem, but just a nagging concern.
So, as we have seen here, there is not a right or wrong answer. It all depends upon what you are taking to refer to.
So, no worries!!

अव अायो विकास निर्माणको कुरा । देशमा संविधान बनाउने कुरा पो हुँदैछ त । थोडै रेलमार्ग बनाउने कुरा हुँदै छ र ? किन चुनावी घोषणापत्रमा रेलमार्गको चित्र बनाउनुपर्यो । पहिले यस्तो संविधान बनाउँछाै जसले सम्पूर्ण विधमान समस्यको निकास दिन भूमिका खेल्नेछ जसमा यी कुराहरू हुनेछन भनेर पो लेखिनुपर्ने होइन र ? जापानीज कागले कान लग्यो भनेर हामी नेपालीले कान छाम्ने कि अाकाश हेर्दै कुद्ने ?

ब्लगको यो अवस्था सम्मको पठनीले अाज लाग्छ हामी बीच धेरै कुराले यो द्वन्द्वको स्थिति सिर्जना गरेको छ। अब मात्र अपशव्दहरू प्रयोग हुन बँाकी छन् । सेन्सर नहुने भने त्यो देखिन्थ्यो सायद । तरपनि तर्क सदैव शक्ति भएरपनि तर्कको प्रयोग कतिसहि तरिकाले गरिन्छ हार र जित त्यहाँ प्रष्टहुन्छ । त्यसैले तमाम साथीहरूले बिराएको बाटो यहि हो कि भन्ने लागेको हो मलाइ । तपाइहरू बीचको लडाइ रोक्ने, कसैको पक्षमा लाग्ने वा तपाइहरू गलत भन्ने अर्थ मेरो होइन । फेरि यसो भन्दै म प्रवेश गरेर मात्र भाग्न खोजेको पनिहोइन । मुलुकलाइ बैदेशिक सहयोग चाहिन्छ भन्ने योगेन जीको तर्क सहि हो तर जब विदेशीलाइ नै राजनीतिमा छिराउने समर्थनमा उहाँ उत्रिनु हुन्छ भने त्यो गलत हाे । किनकि नेपालको भाैतिक, अाथिर्क, प्राविधिक अादि क्षेत्रमा धेरै विदेशीहकाे लगानी छ हमीले त्यो स्विकार्न पर्छ तर जुनले शितल दिन्छ भन्दैमा नाम्लो लगाएर बोकेर हिड्ने कोशिस गर्नु किमार्थ वुध्दिमता होइन । अाैलमा लागेको क्यान्सर निवारण गर्न त्यसको छेदन अपरिहार्य छ अन्यथा हात काटिन सक्छ । हामी अाैला मात्र गुमाएर कुरूप हुने की हातै काटेर अपाङ्ग हुने निर्णय अाफैले गर्न सक्नुपर्छ । हामी वैदेसिक ऋणथापेर लज्जित मात्र हुने की देशको चाबीनै विदेशीलाइ बुझाएर शरणाथी हुने यो बुझ्न जरूरी भएको छ ।त्यसैले अाशा गराै हाम्रा तर्क शक्तिहरू मुलुकका सुदुर भविष्य सम्म कायम रहुन् । हमीले हामीलाइ बुझ्न सक्ने क्षमता पैदा होस् वस्………..शीशीर जीले पनि पक्ष लिएको नसम्झी दिनु होला विचारमा अनुकुलता मात्र देखिएको हो त्यो मत्र संयोग, भूलवस् पनि हुन सक्छ ।

“एउटा कहिल्यै पूरा नहुने राजावादीको सपना”

देशले चाहेको निकास भनेको अधिकार र राज्यसत्ताको बाँडफाँडमा समान पहुँच हो । पहिले जनतामा अधिकार अाउनुपर्यो त्यसपछि मात्र हुन्छन विकास निर्माणका कुराहरू । रेलको चित्र बनाएर, बग्गीको चित्र बनाएर देश विकास गर्छु भन्नु त केटाकेटीमा सिसाकलमले चित्र बनाएर कसको राम्रो ? भन्नुजस्तै हो । कतिपय भिजनहरू राम्रा पनि छन । तर यस्तो संविधानसभाको चुनावको बेला संविधानमा हामी यस्तो ग्यारेन्टी गर्छाै । जातजाती, भाषाभाषी, अल्पसंख्यक, उत्पीडितहरूलाइ यो सुविधान दिन्छाै । शिक्षामा सम्भावनाहरू खोज्ने नीति ल्याउँछाै । समुन्नत समाजको निर्माण गर्ने नीति बनाउँछाै भनेर संविधानमा लेखिने कुराहरूको ग्यारेन्टी गर्नुपर्नेमा फेरी पनि विकास र रेलमार्गको चिल्लो कुराले त्यो पार्टी र त्यसका नेताहरू पक्कै पनि संविधानसभा र नेपालमा बन्ने नयाँ संविधानको लागि इमानदार छैनन भन्ने बुझिन्छ । शिशिरले भनेको राजावादीको पोइन्ट चै कहाँ पुगेर प्रमाणीत हुन्छ भने “मर्यादित राजतन्त्र” रे । भुत्राको मर्यादित । देशमा राजाको मलामी चैत्र २८ गते जाने भनेर तयारी भइरहेको छ भने किन मर्यादित भनिराख्नु । त्यो त कमल थापाको राप्रपा नेपाल भन्दा केही फरक भएन नी । हैन र ?

Dear GM,
May I put it correctly that HK, Singapore, S.Korea and Taiwan were known as the Four Tigers. Their industrial progress needs to be seen in the context of colonialism and rising of communist china after the second world war. Like you I also believe that politics, in its form of power and ideology, is organized so as to fulfil the economic interests. Both of these processes serve each other to make themselves fulfilled. We can discuss in this regard later.
Right now, our interest is to participate the CA election to for the assembly which will draft the new constitution to give a certain political direction to Nepal. (whether we will go for the republic, or whatever). This is our main political agenda at hand and political parties are the one which participate the process and they were the one who, together with the people, brought us to this conducive political sphere. How can we achieve this if we keep thrashing, bashhing the political parties and keep shouting at them.
The reasons I do not like Miyahara’s computer generated pictures and plan are as follows:
He just gives us the pictures, rather than proposing what political structure his party would like to establish in Nepal, which is the most important point to be addressed. And the plan itself is unrealistic. you got to be realistic to some extent, if you are participating an election. And he is displaying those colorful pictures that deceive us, we are hypnotized by those picutres and we have been taken to an unrealisitic world. He is Showing pictures of Nepal with the high speed train plying across the country in twenty years from now? What is this? if it is not a deception, a sleight of hand like a magician does. I would ask him: give us a new constitution first man? whether you are going to liberate us from the centuries old feudal lordism or not? Whether you are taking us out from the grip of monarchy or not?

So, my fellow Nepalese who were running after his speed train were of two types:
1) they were deceived by the colorful picture, and forgot what they should have expected from him instead.
2) those who support the monarchy, got a good opportunity to thrash the political parties and politicians (Man, how can you hold the CA election if you are totally against these political parties and politicians? They were the one who gave us this conducive political sphere thereby putting Gyanendra’s position up in the air for the time being?)as Hope does. How can you possibly deny the fact of politics? Every word you write or spell has political effect, Hope (the commentator above ) is exactly doing politics by thrashing the politicians of Nepal. He is supporting the raja in one way or the other. If everyone lives apolitical life (oh that is just impossible) it will be for the good of Gyane.
So, I wanted to 1) fight the people like Hope (see above) who is in favor of old feudal system 2) I also wanted to pinch my fellows on their chick so as to bring them back to the reality who were deceived by the pictures and were running after ‘kaag’ instead of seeing their own ‘kaan’ first. If they are genuinely concern about Nepal, they got to realize the fact.
one hypothetical question? What would we think, or how would we respond if any businessman from India come up with similar kind of development plan? Would it be the same? or different? Do you still believe that Japs are the most benevolent people in this world? I do not think so much.
your last question? am I a racist? I believe that one of the obstacles to this country’s development is the castism charactrized by Hinduism which is protected by the monarchy. So, those who support the monarchy in Nepal also support the castism and Hinduism. Miyahara believes in it.

I had heard about him and his party from my Software engineering teacher who had joined this party soon after taking part in first seminar.

We can’t compare this party to rest of the political shits in Nepal. They have vision to develop country and politics for them is for country but not country for politics.

And people are venting their anger by supporting relatively apolitical manifesto, more like a dream for every Nepali.

Well, i disagree with shishir and dipesh. May be the idea presented by Takashi Miyahara seems to be biased to imagination rather than fact based, it is not impossible. All the creative things seemed at first absurd and impossible but man’s desire and hard work has made it real. Well, the comment shows how we nepalese are desperate for development. Such idea can bring the change in nation.What our political parties have presented agendas in their manifesto? The most are same as was in ten years ago, the words have no life, and parties use it in showcase. Never any party came across with the idea as presented by miyahara, the idea of skeletal infrastructre of development. I appreciate him and his team for the attempt to put different agendas in their manifestos. Let’s have different approcach, let’s discuss development in politics but not politics in politics. Let our aim be bigger, let’s build the nation. Let not think only of particular party, particular individual or particular business house. We human just don’t live for life; we live for hope, we live for change.

You seem to think that economic development comes from good leadership by political parties. However, your theory has been proved wrong by the Asian Tiger countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, etc, which accomplished economic development without improvement in their government. These countries were actually ruled by corrupt families. Now, some academics believe that good governance follows economic development rather than other way around and I agree with it.
If Nepal enjoyed good infrastructure, people were educated and had good income, we would not be facing violent struggles by Madhesi, Janajati, Maoists, etc. If people were earning good income and were educated, they would be too busy working and earning money than getting bothered by these language, federalism, identity issues. Education would help them understand other ethnic group’s rights and help them achieve equality through peaceful means. These idea from Miyahara is like out of box and I that is what we need right now. All ideas from same old politicians are not going to change something.
Also, why are you so bothered by Miayahara’s ethnicity and skin than by his ideas. Are you a racist against non-Nepalese? I have met plenty of Nepalese who live abroad or in Nepal, who do not care at all about Nepal. Now, who is more patriotic? Nepalese who will not do anything for Nepal and instead rob Nepalese any chance they get or a Japanese Nepali who loves Nepal and is trying to do something for Nepal?

कम्प्युटर्ले जेनेरेट गरेको फोटो हेरेर नफुर्की, फुकिन्छस भने पनि आँफै फुर्की अब मेरो नाम नलिएर।

मैले त्यसरी लेख्नुका दुई कारण थिए:
१) कम्प्युटर जेनेरेटेड फोटोहरुले निर्माण गरेको नक्कली दुनियाँमा रमाउदै स्वैरकल्पनामा उडिरहेका साथीहरुलाई वास्तविक राजनीतिक सामाजिक धरातलमा ओराल्न तपाईंइहरुको गालामा बेस्सरी चिमोट्नु पर्ने भयो; वास्तविकतामा ओर्ले पछी साथीहरुले कस्तो मुक्का फर्काउने रहेछन हेर्छु भन्ने इरादा पनि मनमा आयो।
२) धेरै जसो “ब्लग्मा के लेखेको हुन्छ नहेरी यसो पढे जस्तो (जस्तो फोटो झलक्क हेरे जस्तो)गरेर धेरै जस्तो कमेन्टहरु लेख्ने गर्छन्” भन्ने हल्ला सही हो कि गलत हो? हेर्नु पनि पर्यो भन्ने लाग्यो।

भाई अनुमानका भरमा प्याचच, प्याच्च थुक्छन यो उन्को पुरानै रोग हो। भाईले हाने जस्तो म पत्रकार, राजनीतिकर्मी केही होइन। अन्य साथीले अनुमान गरे जस्तो म सरकारी कर्मचारी, राजनीतिक नियुक्ती पाएको कुनै भरौटे नेता केही होइन, म श्रमजीबी नै हुँ। न त मैले, त्यो भाईले लेख्या जस्तो “दादा गिरी” गर्छु। तर म के चाँही गर्दिन भने एउटा बिदेशी (नागरिकता नेपाली त छ ) ले खोलेको पार्टी ले देखाएको सपनामा केटाकेटी जस्तो रमाएर आफ्नै देशको राजनीतिक पार्टीहरुलाई सराप्दिन, थुक्दिन, र यस्लाई विश्वाश पनि गर्दिन। आज यस्को घोषणापत्र राम्रो, भोली अर्को बिहारिको घोषणा पत्र राम्रो। म चाँही नेपाली नै हो, मेरो मन नेपाली नै छ। म कल्पना गर्न सक्छु, घरको यादले घरबाट टाढा हुनेलाई नै सताउछ, तेस्तै होला नेपालको बारेको चिन्ताको सवाल्मा पनि। अहिले नेपालमा संबिधान कस्तो लेख्ने भन्ने चुनाव हुन लागेको हो, नेपालले कस्तो राजनीतिक बाटो लिने, भन्ने बारेमा हुन लगेको हो। तपाईं हरुले सोच्न थालनु भएको जस्तो लाग्यो, “अब नेपाल फर्केको बेला high speed electric train बाट आफ्नो पुरानो जन्म घर जान पाइने भयो” तेसैले अत्ती नै भएर मैले तपाईंहरुलाई चिमोटेकै हो, न यस्मा दादागिरिको कुरा आउछ, न कुनै बौदिक्ता कै। मैले चिमोटे तपाईं हरु फर्कनु भयो, धन्यवाद।

I Was laughing when i first looked at pictures but after going through the manifesto of this new party, I am really impressed with his idea. His discription and anylisis of hi view is great and realistic.
Although, I wont be able to cast my vote to this party on this election, But i will definately try to convience other people who listen on my view to support this party.

Hi Hope,
Politics is the key that unlocks all kinds of problems. It seems to me that your moral support is towards the king, in one or the other pretensions, as you claim that “people are sick and tired of politics”. You have also repeated the same phrase that the king used to spell so often that “political parties have time and again failed to deliver even a simplest of promises,people have been deceived time and again by “political” parties”. This exactly qualifies you that how supportive you are of the king. You do not seem to have realized yet that the political parties, and indeed the political parties, together with the people, were the one to bring us to this political sphere.
You have also instrumentalized the notion of “hope” (for me it is just a hopelessness to hope for something that will not realized)so as to mislead the commentators thereby to coopt their ‘naiveness’ in favor of the continuity of ‘monarchy’ in Nepal. It is said that the Japanese society is structured around the notion and practice of ‘hope’.
Mr. Miyahara has also (mis)used the same notion of hope and he wants to deceive the Nepalese people by showing colorful pictures. His is just a dexterity to fool the Nepalese people, including the commentators above.

At least someone has the guts to dream and express it in pictures. The top leaders as they say have it only in their mouth, which is duly forgotten after the elections. It might be very unlikely in the near future, but sure it is a possibility. What if the so called top leaders had thought of it and taken initiatives to implement some of their plans. Nepal would have been way ahead.
Lets face it guys. It surely is a unique manifesto and all the other parties are concerned about dividing the country. Who has given a damn thought on the development of the country? This foreigner at least deserves an applause. All other politicians are crap.

Can somebody live apolitical life bytheway?? People are sick and tired of politics and dogmatic mentality like yours,thinking others as stupids,fools,”anpadhs”,”Banda Buddhi”. Yes, people who commented positively here are not as intelligent as you or as sharp as Dipesh or even not as cool as Koolhead, they are just ordinery bunch of people with “little” or “no” knowledge, as you put it,but what they clearly meant is they are desperately looking for ‘Hope’, which is seriousely missing in the manifestos of “Rajnitik” parties. They could not find any wordings, let alone the commitment,to serve the country and it’s people. Your political parties have time and again failed to deliver even a simplest of promises,people have been deceived time and again by “political” parties, so the overwhelming response to this manifesto(it is unrealistic ofcourse ,ha, you think you are the only one who know that, huh?)suggest the frustration of the populace,the mistrust for the ‘political’ parties. It is a fantasy,yes, but what’s so bad to have at least a dream to become better?? What’s so bad to make a vision, to achieve something which no other politcal parties even think of?? What is so bad to have a start atleast, a number is meager, compare to “political” parties, but can you see any ray of light in their manifestos except politics?? Are they able to convey the message that they will atleast try to make our lives better should they win?? Is there any ‘political’ party who says we will work for a country and not for their party??
The election is for CA and I believe CA will be dissolved once the new constitution is made, do ‘political’ parties know what after constitution is made??Do we need to talk about economy,do we need to talk about the basic needs of the people?? NO, they donot have any vision, they always ruled in chaos and they will always rule in chaos. The mere existance of ‘political’ parties depends on the chaotic situation of the country. If country gets better and people can have choices, I bet not even a single person from all of your ‘political’ parties can win a single seat. It’s unfortunate that people are left with no choice but to choose from notoriously incompetent,notoriously corrupt and notoriously criminal ‘political’ party leaders to make our constitution which supposed to write a new vision for our ‘New Nepal’.
Fantasy it is, but, what if somebody really mean it?? What if we could achieve even a slightest portion of it?? What if some people really wanna try and go for it?? Should every new idea and vision be ridiculed in a manner you did?? Can people who are not as intelligent as you and as political as you can have some say too?? And you know what, majority of populace are apolitical, they will not even talk about it if they can.They just want to get on with their lives and possibly wanna live in an environment suggested by Miyahara, what’s wrong with that, I wonder!!

Going thru the Manifesto The party seems to have done a lot of homework. It is not verbal illusions like other political parties’ manifasto. It is focussed on what to do. It is nice to see something positive being proposed. I hope every party moves away from begging mentality. Our Finance Minister or even Prime Minister boasts on how much loan we received from ADB or the World Bank. These loans have not done anything except helping a few powerful make big building and buying cars. Our children are already indebted for nothing. People are doing marvellous things but they are not recognized and accepted. Our leaders should start praising them So that they get enthusiastic to do more. What can you expect if you depend on others you have to always run to them. Certainly they will play politics with you.
We have to start thinking differently. Nepal is not a resource poor country. It is full of resources like the Himalays, rivers, forest, beauty, culture, etc. Where is an attempt to manage and utilize them? We need to start identifying these resources and managing them. Our efforts should move towards investing on them and their management should go to local people not to multinationals and rich, Community forestry in Nepal has shown that people are ready to manage and will manage effectively. Please learn from community forestry initiatives.

Takashi Miyahara – some background info
Lifestyle Investor
New Business Age June 2003, Kathmandu
Takashi Miyahara has been living in Nepal for the last 41 years and has been an ace tourism entrepreneur of this country for over 34 years. However, he is still an alien, as he does not possess a Nepali citizenship as yet though he applied for one last June.
Though Miyaharasan is full of praise for the Nepal of the past, he has lots of complaints about the present. Still he applied for the Nepali citizenship in June last year and has been relentlessly pursuing the application, though in vain. When asked to explain it, Miyahara says though he has lots of complaints as a businessman with today’s Nepali bureaucracy, he is married to a Nepali and has a daughter and feels comfortable with the Nepalis. And now he is interested to live in Nepal as an ordinary citizen, not as a businessman.
The background to Miyahara’s complaints and love about Nepal makes an interesting case story illustrating the plight of a foreign investor who invests in Nepal in a personal, not corporate, capacity.
Lifestyle Investor
Miyahara’s case illustrates the typical example of lifestyle investors that Nepal has been receiving. Such investors are individuals (not corporate) who first get attracted by the country’s natural, cultural and social heritages, and try to find out ways for long-term living here. And the best way they find is to become an investor. Such attraction of the foreigner can be converted into a very good avenue to attract more foreign direct investment, if the government takes proper policies and implements them in a strategically calculated manner. But as this case depicts, the record of Nepali bureaucracy in this field is not so encouraging so far.
When Miyahara first arrived here from his native country Japan in 1962 as a mountaineer, he was just 28 years old. That year he became the first person to scale 6,800 meter high Mt. Mukut in the Dhawalagiri range and that experience fascinated him so much that no sooner he went back home upon completion of his expedition, he was trying to come to Nepal for longer-term stay. A holder of Bachelor’s degree in Chemical and Mechanical Engineering, Miyahara left the engineering job in prestigious Japanese companies, and approached the Department of Cottage Industry of Nepal for a job here, a request that was readily granted by the Nepali government starved of such highly skilled technical manpower.
“Then”, he recounts, “while going from place to place within Nepal in the course of the two year contract with the Department of Cottage Industry preparing schemes for prospective industries , I saw that there were good prospects for the development of tourism industry in Nepal, and I started that.”
It should be noted that there was no Japanese embassy in Nepal till early 1970s. Thus Miyahara can be considered to be the virtual first Japanese ambassador to Nepal. He set up Trans Himalayan Tours (P) Ltd. in 1968 as a Nepali travel agency and started bringing in Japanese tourists in “big way”, as he puts it. The next year he set up Himalaya Kanko Kaihatsu Co. Ltd. (HKK) in Japan, and this company was soon sending 1,500-1,600 Japanese tourists per year to Nepal.
The business was further diversified in 1970 by setting up Trans Himalayan Trekking (P) Ltd. to operate trekking services. In 1971, Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation (RNAC) started flying to Japan and Miyahara was the one to promote RNAC in Japan. His firm was Sales Agent of RNAC from 1975 to 1982 and then General Sales Agent until 1991. His firm is still the Passenger Sales Agent of RNAC in Japan.
Thus, Miyahara has been the first person to start the people to people link between Nepal and Japan. Hotelier-mountaineer Miyahara also tried to scale Mt. Everest in 1994 from the south cole, but had to return from 8793 meters height due to eyesight problem. But his relation with Mt. Everest started much earlier than that. In 1970, he started, with investment from him and his Nepali and Japanese friends, the construction of Hotel Everest View (HEV) at Syangboche near Namche Bazaar, the gateway to Mt. Everest.
Situated at the height of 3,820 metres offering a breathtaking close up view of 15 Himalayan peaks (including Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse), this property was inaugurated in 1973 and it earned the fame as a hotel situated at the highest altitude on the earth and got itself recorded so in the Guinness Book of World Records. “So it is a manmade heritage of Nepal”, points out proud Miyahara though with a wry smile feeling the pang of perpetual losses incurred from this property so far.
According to him, the property has caused him a loss of about one million US Dollar so far. It is a separate interesting story about how the HEV started, why it faced the problems, what efforts were made to save it and why these
efforts failed.
One such effort to save the HEV was the setting up of another hotel in Kathmandu. In 1972, Miyahara started work for Hotel Jaya International, which is now the Hotel Himalaya (at Kopundole). The idea was to bring the tourists from Japan first to Hotel Himalaya, then to send them to HEV.
These two projects (HEV and Hotel Himalaya) offer two very excellent example in site selection for hotel property, though both have not set any example of matching business success. Therefore, Miyahara says his friends rate him “very good in site selection but not so good in doing business”.
That means, also the Hotel Himalaya is not making any profit. Though it has been in perpetual loss all along, it was doing alright till two years ago, but it recorded a huge loss of Rs. 10 million in the year ended mid-July 2001 and that loss increased to Rs. 13 million in the following year, informs Miyahara showing the annual reports of his hotel. This is despite the fact that Miyahara draws his salary not from Hotel Himalaya but from Tokyo based HKK. On top of that Hotel Himalaya has not been paying any money to HKK on account of various charges that the hotel has to pay the Japanese company. Miyahara says, Hotel Himalaya owes over Rs. 100 million to HKK as of now.
Mitsui’s Return
Hotel Himalaya was a property set up with 85% shareholding from Mitsui (a real estate company that claims the credit of being first company to construct high rise buildings in Japan), 5% from other Nepali shareholders and the rest 10% from Miyahara’s companies – Trans Himalayan Tours and HKK.
But Mitsui withdrew from the project three years ago for a number of reasons, says Miyahara. One, it was a very small investment for a giant like Mitsui. So they did not find it worth pursuing. Second, the tourism business in Nepal was not picking up as expected. Last, but not the least, Mitsui was irritated with the way Nepali bureaucracy
was behaving.
Miyahara had to pay Mitsui for their share, which he did by borrowing in Japan. Unfortunately the situation in tourism industry here further deteriorated. The declining Japanese economy and the deteriorating law and order situation of Nepal added to the miseries.
Then Miyahara tried to sell his hotel and he also received some interested parties, but he could not sell it because the offer he received was ‘very low’. Therefore, now he is planning some expansions in the property. Since one of the reasons for the failure of the hotel was its over-dependency in a single market – Japan – Miyahara is now changing his strategy targeting more local business. In this connection, the first thing that he is planning is an annexure to the existing property by utilizing the land that is lying unused in the premises. The additional space to be created with the budgeted investment of some Rs. 50 million will be used for restaurants, shops and the like. Though the plan for this annexure was there for some time, Mitsui did not allow it to be implemented as they did not want to go for any additional investment with the losses continuing from the existing operations.
Despite these bitter experiences in Nepal, Miyahara says he is satisfied at his selection of Nepal as a place of work.
“People here praise me as the one who promoted Nepal in Japan, though they do not show that appreciation in their action.” he says, adding, “I’m happy however that I came and worked in Nepal. Had I been in Japan I would be working as an engineer in some factory and nobody would have noticed me. But in Nepal there are so many people who know me. I have earned prestige here. I’m satisfied with the direction of the work, though I’m dissatisfied with the profitability side.”

Good thinking, atleast I am proud of that someone thinks seriously positive for the development of nepal but I think this project won’t be successful between 1000yrs.
I am saying this, because we have already 50 yrs back due to andolan & home war. Due to this events we have lost a lot of life & wealth. Everybody must think positive whatever it may be but don’t think it will be successful but we may work hard for the same.

Some one has asked here about the resources (i mean economy) to full fill the dream which Mr. Miyahara has sketched in his menifesto, i belive once you have will to do any thing you can get ride of all the difficulties.
Yes, there will be different hurdles but those hurdles can be crossed and the goal can be achived.
We are focussing to make constitution but how good you write in piece of paper, when it comes to implementation, if you are not willing to implement it in right spirit then there is always room for manupulating words in ones favour.
We have examples of UK and USA, UK does not have written constitution but we can see their functioning of democracy, USA has very short written constitution but we can see the democracy there.
In place we can look on India, the longest constitution but due to implementors, still lower level Indian people have not tasted fruits of democracy inplace they have to suffers with the dictates of different elected kings.
So major thing is implementation and for that the leadership should be honest and visionary that we do not have. I have not seen any of the leader of Nepal who has vision and really wants to contribute for the country.
The Kingship in Nepal has become curse for its people so first we need to get ride of it then only we can move forward in the direction of development and prosperity in the leadership of some visionary.
I have great hope with young leadership like Mr. Gagan Thapa and some intelectual leadership like Pradeep Giri and Narhari Acharya. They should fight with the present bunch of mentally currupt leadership and get ride of them.

I know Keynesian economics theory. You are right in saying that govt spending increases public spending but only in long term.
You said: Increase in govt. spending -> increase in jobs -> increase in public income -> increase in production -> increase in GDP.
Yes its true but the road between the increase and govt spending and increase in GDP is a long way especially in context to Nepal.
Nepal is a nation where our older generation never had any social securities, so saving as much money as possible was the only option to secure ones future. This is what the current generation has seen. Even if govt provides jobs and social securities which will increase public income, the people in Nepal will not drastically increase their consumption. They will save a major part of their income because they will still have a doubt about their future financial conditions. Less increase in consumption means less increase in production. So it means less increase in GDP.
Well, for such economic strategies to show its effect takes time and in context to Nepal it will not only take time but will also need a series of continuous increase in GDP quarterly.
Due to increase in markets (physical and internet), people can spend quickly much more than 50 years ago. So inflation will always be putting breaks on hot economic growth. This is whats happening in China now.
Its possible to make Nepal financial stronger within a decade but its only possible if we could pull money from the rest of the world by increasing our exports drastically. Like South Korea did through its steel industry.
The mutation of Phillips Curve is a good example to prove that the cause and effect of every economic theory changes with time. So we should suggest something new economic policy for new Nepal.

Looking at the Ellection menifesto of NNDP (Nepal National Development Party), I would like to salute Mr. Miyahara for his great vision.
Atleast now Nepalese leader should open their eye and think for the country in place of looting the country. Country and countrymen needed the things proposed in this menifesto but our so called big parties and leaders are indulged in unnecessary gossiping and blaming each other. Lets make Mr. Miyahara as Primeminister or President of the country, thought he might not be citizen of the country by birth but he is more Nepali than any body else take birth in nepal but busy looting the country and made the country dark for ever.
I know, Mr. Miyahara does not have organization of his party and in present situation no body will listen him but i would like to request our so called big parties and their leadership atleast look on his menifesto and start implementing it. All the prolems of Nepal will be over. No political principle can work if stomach is hungry.
Therefore i would like to request all the leaders and countrymen to think for the country and its development rather being busy in infighting and making the country worse and worst.

Hi there Koolhead,
I don’t believe that increase in government spending causes reduction in public income. It goes the other way, that is increase in government spendings will increase public spending, and consequently the economy of the country as a whole. There are enough Economic theories to prove what I am saying. Look at
Keynesian economics theory, and it suggests that government should increase its spending during hard times. President Eisenhover failed during the time of Great Depression(1929), mainly because he thought in the same way you are thinking now. He didn’t want any debt, so denied to help Americans who were desperately looking for jobs and food at those bitter time.
He was replaced by FDR (President Roosevelt) who followed Keynesian theory and increased the government spendings. He created new jobs to American people and helped them through a plan, which he named the Great Deal.
If you are wondering how increased government spendings help public to increase their income, let me make this clear to you. When government increases spending (let’s say by building a road), then people will have jobs and then some money to spend. when people spend money, the GDP of that country will rise; rise so much that it outruns the amount public is paying for their taxes. As a result, the country’s economy will flourish.
That’s why Japanese government is spending millions of dollars and making roads in Hokkaido that people seldom use. That’s why the U.S. government is offering tax rebate to its people. Qualified Americans will be receiving at least $600 cheque from the U.S. govenment very soon this Spring, and President Bush is very confident that it will help to boost up the present crippling U.S. economy.

Seems unrealistic in near future though, we must applaud the spirit and must support these outstanding ideas to prosper,as a matter of fact every other mainstream parties are selling the same old unrealistic dream aswell,which they have proved time and again could not be fulfilled. The old parties and some new terrorist turned “mainstream” parties have nomore plans than to rule the coutry, to rule it’s people. Not even a single party has come out saying we are here to serve the country and serve it’s people. All those socalled main parties are either motivated by the rotten ideaology or lured by the charisma of power.They have never thought about a country and it’ s people , they never did,and they will never do. I would vote for this party. This is what we want in Nepal. I was discussing with my friend about the manifestos of other parties a while ago. As none of those present any model about NEW Nepal, I was suspicious about their plan.
I believe this party will bring real change if allowed. The interest of “Tire Leaders” [political leaders whose background is tire burning] may not match here. But, this should be real dream of Nepalese leader rather than just to be a “Wall President”.

This is the best thing I have ever seen from a political party. Nepal really lacks politicians with vision. I know this is a dream but it is alright to have a dream/vision which is not politically biased and is planned purely to benefit citizens of Nepal. Well done…you have my vote.

When I looked at the drawings, I thought they were made by some Japanese artists. And, I was very close. If you go outside Tokyo (you shouldn’t go very far away; just to Nagoya or Gumba Ken), you will see lots of tunnels like the one in the above drawing. When I first went there, I have also imagined that drilling hills and paving railroad tracks inside them, will work perfectly in a mountainous country like Nepal. Good job Miyahara-san! [I wonder it will be better to have a Yamanote-sen (the train that goes around Tokyo) in Kathmandu so that we can reduce our pollution and conserve energy.]
I really liked the idea. What other parties namely NC, NCP, NCP(M) are proposing are issues related only to the political division of Nepal. This party is unique in the sense that it went a step ahead of that and proposed a plan for the economical development of Nepal. Bulding infra structures like bridges, Int’l Airports and Rail roads are like paving the road for long term economical success in one country.
So, the proposal is good, if not best.

Lalitpur constituency # 2? That’s where he lives? . He is the owner of the HOTEL HIMALAYA, KUPONDOL. He has been living in Nepal for more than 40 years. Has he just painted those beautiful pictures or are there also the sources of money and management which he must find so as to accomplish this goal. It sounds to me that Prachanda and Miyaharaa, both joining each other, can have a perfect collaboration as Prachand also wants to make Nepal Singapore or Switzerland in 20 years, only on condition that we make him the president. Miyahara should have stood for election. I would have voted for him. He is visionary. Thirt years ago, he predicted the water problem in Kathmandu and said we should move the capital to Chitwan.
Hundreds of Nepali politicians came and went after looting billions of rupees. Why not give this guy with vision a chance?
I do not know how he will accomplish but at least he has some ideas compared to our NC, UML, and Maoist leaders who only talk and do nothing.

What a splendid dream. It could have been true had our politicians and kings had even thought of it.
For centuries; our leaders, planners , executives, government and other dutiful officials have been dreaming nothing more than thier own home, lifestyle, bank balance…… I wish I could blow them up at once.

theoritically it sounds one of the best picture of new nepal, which are published so far. But the key missing part is how are they gonna to do all of these development? What will be the new source of economics.. How will they arrange the present crisis, what is their foreign policy especially regarding relationship with china, india, USA and more…
May be i didnt go through each and every line so that i coulndt find the answer, but i dought they include these things too. For an example, theoritically it sounds a brilliant idea to move the capital of nepal from kathmandu to other palce, but the cost of doing that and its political, social, economical and technicals challanges are missing. Or it is that easy to do so?
This party’s proposal seems to be a project done by a young energetic school students for his social study class. Despite the fact, the whole proposal could be a nice sketch of the new nepal. Because so far maoist, nepali congress and UML havent sketch the clear map of new nepal, beside diving the contry into small states and bla bla…

Such ideas are practically impossible, at least within next 50 years.
The world runs under one money-circulation rule. Such development plans require huge sum of money. The government spending increases and as a result reduces the income level of public through tax reformation. Or it may increase the foreign loan again putting govt under fiscal and monetary pressure. Either ways, it takes a long time even to start for a change.
It doesn’t mean that we should not dream.
Yes we should, but there is only one way to realize them. Leave out carpets, tourism and handicrafts, these are the products for which we have to beg in front of foreigners to sell them. Instead, through our innovation and technology, we should sell something whose needs for the rest of the world will be more than our desire to sell. For eg. softwares, machines etc. (or may be gas, oil by luck)
It is very hard, but our generation requires some proper way built by our politics. Then we will walk to the top of the world other than mt everest.

At least…i am thinking now…I am in somewhere…in our future nepal…but to make such things in nepal, takes one more hundred years…I know it is not impossible! BUT the current political leaders can’t do anything like that! Anyways…i must say…its really a great thinking…at least someone is thinking…its really nice to think about future nepal…nice…i love it but I am not sure whether i will vote them or not!
