विश्व अधिकारी/अन्टार्टिका
मानव जातिको प्रभावबाट तुलनात्मक रुपमा निकै कम प्रभाव परेको यस महादेश को ९८% भाग हिउँले ढाकेको छ। विज्ञानले गरेको अहिलेसम्मको खोजले त्यहाँ मानव बस्तीको कुनै प्रमाण त भेट्टाउन सकेको छैन तर त्यहाँ पाइने केही जीवहरु भने उक्त ठाउँमा हजारौं वर्षदेखि रहेको प्रमाणहरु छन्। यसरी भन्नुपर्दा उक्त ठाउमा मानव जाति भन्दा पनि सूक्ष्म जीवहरु नै पहिले पुगेका थिए र शायद उनीहरुमा रहेको अति विषम परिस्थिति सहन गर्न सक्ने शक्तिले होला, अहिलेसम्म पनि अन्टार्क्टिकाको जुनसुकै अवस्थामा पनि जीवित नै रहेका छन।
सर्वप्रथम मेरो पहिलो ब्लग पढेर प्रश्न तथा प्रतिक्रिया दिनु हुने सम्पूर्ण पाठकवर्गमा आभार व्यक्त गर्न चाहन्छु। तिनै प्रश्न तथा प्रतिकृयाका उत्तरहरुलाई समेटेर दोश्रो ब्लग तयार परेको छु। हुनत तपाईँहरुका असीमित कौतुहल तथा अन्टार्टिकाको बारेको लेखलाई एउटा ब्लग म समेट्न खोज्नु भनेको समुद्रको पानी बाल्टिनमा राख्न खोज्नु सरह नै होला। तर पनि मैले देखेका, जानेका र सुनेका कुराहरुलाई समेट्दै तपाईँहरुका कौतुहललाई मेटाउने प्रयास गर्नेछु।
कतिपय पाठकहरुले सोध्नुभएका प्रश्नहरुको ठोस उत्तर विज्ञानले आजसम्म पनि दिनसकेको छैन। र त्यस्ता विषयहरुलाई मैले तपाईंहरुलाई नै अध्ययन गरेर प्रष्ट हुनको लागि छाडिदिएको छु। यसका अलावा अन्टार्टिकाको बारेमा तथा मेरो अनुसन्धानको बारेमा अझ बढी जानकारीको लागि हाम्रो कार्यक्रमले सन्चालन गरेको ब्लग, अन्टार्टिकासम्बन्धी लेखहरु तथा प्रेस विज्ञप्तिहरु अध्ययन गर्नुहोला।
रकेट ट्वाइलेट।
प्रथमत: म अन्टार्टिका कसरी पुगेँ, किन पुगेँ र कोसँग पुगेँ भन्ने कुरा प्रष्ट पार्न चाहन्छु। म संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिकाको युटाहा राज्यको एउटा युनिभर्सिटीमा विद्यावारिधी गर्दैछु र मेरो अनुसन्धानको विषय हो Nematode हरु कसरी प्रतिकूल वातावरण सहन सक्छन् र उक्त अवस्थामा बाँच्नको लागि कुन Gene ले कसरी सहयोग गर्दछन्। त्यस्तै साधारण अवस्थामा भन्दा विषम अवस्थामा बाँच्दा ती जीवहरुमा कस्ता किसिमका परिवर्तनहरु आउँछन् र ती परिवर्तनहरुले कसरी बाँच्नको लागि सहयोग गर्छन् भन्ने अनुसन्धान म गर्दैछु।
मेरो Advisor गत १९ वर्षदेखि अन्टार्टिकाको सुख्खा उपत्यकामा सन्चालित एक पर्यावरणीय चक्र सम्बन्धी अनुसन्धानमा संलग्न छन्। अन्टार्टिकाको हिउँले नढाकेको २% भाग मध्य पर्ने उक्त ठाउँमा सञ्चालित अनुसन्धानको मुख्य उद्देश्य त्यस भागमा कस्तो किसिमको जैविक विविधता पाइन्छ, त्यो विविधता कसरी फैलिएको छ र हाल पृथ्वीमा भइरहेको परिवर्तनले त्यहाँको पर्यावरणलाई कसरी असर पारेको छ भन्ने रहेको छ।
यसबाहेक कार्यक्रमले अहिले भइरहेको परिवर्तनलाई आँकलन गर्दै यस्तै हुँदै गएमा भविष्यमा कस्तो परिवर्तन र कति मात्रामा परिवर्तन होला भन्ने विषयमा पनि अध्ययन गर्नेछ। यो कार्यक्रम संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका को अन्टार्क्टिक कार्यक्रम (युसेप) को सहयोगमा अन्टार्टिकाको मेक्मुर्डो स्टेसनबाट सन्चालित छ। यसरी युसेप अन्तर्गत सन्चालित भएको हुनाले हाम्रो सम्पूर्ण खर्च (यात्रादेखि लिएर खाने, बस्ने र अनुसन्धान गर्नेसम्म) उक्त कार्यक्रमले व्यहोरिरहेको छ।
केही साथीहरुले त्यहाँ यात्रा गर्दा कति खर्च लाग्छ भनेर सोध्नुभएको रहेछ। म अहिले त्यसको सही उत्तर दिनसक्ने अवस्थामा छैन। तर मैले अन्टार्टिकाको यात्रामा गएर फर्केकाहरुसँग गरेको कुरा अनुसार कम्तिमा ८ देखि १० हजार डलरसम्म लाग्ने रहेछ। प्रायजसो त्यसरी यात्रामा जानेहरु दक्षिण अमेरिका भएर समुद्री मार्गबाट जाँदा रहेछन्।
आजभन्दा अगाडि कति जना नेपाली त्यहाँ पुगेका छन् भन्ने कुनै आधिकारिक तथ्याङ्क त छैन। तर हामीले सामान्य ज्ञानमा पढे अनुसार एक जना नेपाली धेरै पहिले नै अन्टार्टिका पुगिसकेका थिए। अरु एक जना पनि ब्रिटिश आर्मी अन्तर्गत रहेर कुनै काम विशेषले त्यहाँ पुगेको सुनिन्छ। यसरी हेर्दा जो जति नेपालीहरु त्यहाँ पुगेका छन्, सबै कुनै विदेशी समूह तथा संघ सस्थामा संलग्न भएर गएका छन्। आशा गरौ, हामी पनि कुनै दिन नेपालीका घरेलु समस्याबाट माथि उठेर संसारमा के कस्ता परिवर्तन भएका छन् र तिनीहरुले हाम्रो पर्यावरणलाई कस्तो असर पर्न सक्छ भन्ने अध्ययन गर्न आफ्नै टोलीमा संलग्न भएर अन्टार्टिका पुग्न सक्नेछौ। विशेषत: अन्टार्टिकामा भएका परिवर्तनहरुबाट पाठ सिक्दै हामी हाम्रा सुन्दर हिमाली पर्यावरणलाई जोगाउनतर्फ पाइला चाल्न सक्छौ।

अति नै प्रतिकूल वातावरण भएकोले त्यहाँ कुनै किसिमका विकसित वनस्पतिहरु भने पाइदैन र वनस्पतिको नाममा Algae, Moss, तथा केही प्रकारका Fern हरु पाइन्छन्। त्यस्तै जमीनमा पाइने जीवहरुमा ठूला जीव त केही पनि पाइँदैनन्। तर सूक्ष्म जीवहरुमा पनि Nematode, Rotifer, Tardigrade तथा Springtail नै प्रमुख हुन्। त्यहाँ पाइने ठूला जीवजन्तुहरु भनेका समुद्री चरा Penguin र Seal तथा विभिन्न किसिमका माछाहरु नै हुन्। यसका अलावा केही प्रकारका चराहरु जस्तो स्कुवा, केही परेवा वर्गका चराहरु पनि पाइँदा रहेछन्। जहाँकहीँ पनि अन्टार्टिकाको कुरा गर्दा Penguin को नै चित्र अगाडि आउँछ। अन्टार्टिका को मुख्य आकर्षण को रुपमा रहेका यी चराहरु ठूलाठूला बथानमा बस्दा रहेछन् (लाखौं सम्मको) र जीवनको धेरैजस्तो भाग पानीमा र प्रजननको लागि जमिनमा जाँदा रहेछन्। यिनीहरुको संख्या कति छ भन्ने त यकिन गर्न गाह्रो छ (किनकी अन्टार्टिकाको धेरै भागमा अझै पनि के के छ र के भइरहेको छ भन्ने थाहा छैन) तर पनि वर्षौँदेखि यी चराहरुको अध्ययनमा संलग्न वैज्ञानिकहरुका अनुसार तिनीरुको संख्या भने बढ्दै गइरहेको छ। ती चराहरुको मुख्य शत्रु को रुपमा रहेको बलीन व्हेलको संख्यामा आएको कमिलाई यसको कारण मानिएको छ।
अन्टार्टिकाको केही भाग चिसिने क्रम जारी छ भने कुनै भाग तातिँदै गएकोले Iceberg हरु पग्लिदै जाने समस्या देखिसकेको छ। सबैभन्दा कहालिलाग्दो त अन्टार्टिका माथि रहेको ओजोन तह मा भएको प्वाल अन्टार्टिका महदेश भन्दा ठूलो भएको पाइन्छ। हुनतः अनुसन्धानले देखाए अनुसार उक्त प्वाल पुरिने क्रम जारी छ। तर पूर्ण रुपमा पूर्वावस्थामा आउनको लागि भने वर्षौँ लाग्ने भने पक्का छ। यसरी यस्ता शीताधिक क्षेत्रहरुमा आएका परिवर्तनहरुले निश्चय पनि राम्रो कुराको संकेत गरिरहेको छैन। यी परिवर्तनहरुलाई हेर्दा के हामीले पनि अब हाम्रा हिमाली क्षेत्र, त्यहाँको पर्यावरण तथा त्यहाँ भएका सूक्ष्म परिवर्तनहरुलाई नियाल्ने बेला आएन र ?
अन्टार्टिका जस्तो मानिसको निकै कम प्रभाव परेको ठाउँमा त त्यति धेरै असर परेको छ भने हाम्रा हिमाली भागमा के कस्तो असर परिसकेको होला ? त्यसैले अब त्यसतर्फ सतर्क हुनु पर्ने बेला आइसकेको छ।
यसै प्रसंगमा मलाई मेक्मर्डो स्टेसनमा रहेको फोहोर व्यवस्थापन सम्बन्धी कार्यक्रमको बारेमा केही लेख्न मन लाग्यो, जसको सम्बन्ध, मलाई लाग्छ, हाम्रो हिमाली क्षेत्रहरुसँग केही न केही रुपमा छ। अन्टार्टिकाको सन्धि अनुसार त्यहाँ कुनै पनि चिज गाड्न तथा विसर्जन गर्न पाइँदैन। त्यसैले त्यहाँ निस्कने सबै फोहोर लाई कि त Recycle गरेर अरु कुनै रुपमा प्रयोग गर्नु पर्दछ या त महादेशबाहिर पठाउनु पर्दछ। त्यसैले फोहोर व्यवस्थापनको लागि त्यहाँ स्टेसनदेखि लिएर फिल्डका स्टेसनसम्म सबै ठाउँमा विभिन्न किसिमका फोहोर फाल्ने कन्टेनर तथा कसरी फोहोर छुट्याउने भन्ने जानकारी दिइएका हुन्छन्। त्यहाँ निस्कने सम्पूर्ण फोहोर मध्ये केहीलाई पुन: प्रयोग गर्ने तथा केही लाई ठूल्ठूला कन्टेनरहरुमा राखेर महादेश बाहिर पठाइँदो रहेछ, जुन पछि Recycle गरिन्छ। सबैभन्दा महत्वपूर्ण कुरा त फोहोर व्यवस्थापनको लागि बनाइएको पूर्वाधार, कार्यान्वयन पक्षको कडाइ र फोहोर फाल्नेहरुमा रहेको चेतना तथा इमान्दारिता नै रहेछ। साँच्चै भन्ने हो भने हामीले त्यहाँको त्यहाँको व्यवस्थापनबाट हाम्रो शहरी क्षेत्र तथा मानवसिर्जित फोहोर थुप्रिदै गइरहेको हिमाली भेगमा गर्न सकिने फोहोर विसर्जनबारे धेरै सिक्न सक्ने देखिन्छ। तर त्यसका लागि आवश्यक पूर्वधार तयार गरेर जनमानसमा सचेतना ल्याउने काम नगरी यो सफल हुनेछैन।

Dear Bishwo ji,
Thank you very much again for the kind information regarding the far continent which is only the dream for us (specially those Nepali people who are just fighting for the day to day food) though I haven’t seen Antarctica even in my dream yet. Lolz! Nothing for any research for myself, but just being keen interested to know something about Antarctica (really not about your research because your research topic is kind of beyond of my knowledge – but I appreciate your topic and hard work and I hope this will help to explore something). I had gone through the web pages that you have mentioned above in the article from where I came to understand a lot. But still I want to know something more about Antarctica.
I read in some articles in the websites that ‘seven countries have made territorial claims in Antarctica’. What does exactly this mean? Are they claiming some regions/areas of Antarctica to be their land? Isn’t the Antarctica itself an independent continent in the world? What does The Antarctic Treaty say about this? How can a country make territorial claims in a continent. Is that only because of they have discovered the continent? If some countries have claimed then in which country’s area you are in now?
Though there are so many questions which cannot be found only by typing some keywords in the google search, this much for now. I am really sorry if I have asked too much and out of your scope. You can just post or send links where I can find the answers.

Fortunately i have been to his house once before. and i have seen his foto with Late King Birendra awarding him with medal.

At last after a long time, I am again reading the article from Mysansar. Thanks adhikari jee for your useful information. I really like it. Mysansar did a great job by posting such article. A drastic change in its blog posting. Otherwise only article of dirty politics of Nepal. कत्ती चिन्ता प्रकट छन यि सोचाइ मा यि बैज्ञानिक युबक को ! एकदम नै आश लागेको छ तपाईं हरु जस्तो चिन्तन्शिल बिद्यार्थी हरुले पक्कै पनि भोली ( यो भोली छिट्टै नै होस् ! कामना गर्छु ! ) हाम्रो मुलुकको बातावरण को निम्ती ठुलो कसरत गर्नु हुने छ ।
बिश्ब जि ! हाम्रो मुलुकलाई तपाईं हरु जस्तो बातावरण प्रती चिन्तित कर्णधार हरु को नितान्त खाचो छ ।
आफ्नो उदेश्य ( पढाई – लछ्य ) पूरा भए पछी नेपाल फर्किनुस् है ! ( यसरी किन अनुरोध गरेकी भने नि , धेरै नेपाली बिद्दान – बैज्ञानीक -डाक्टर आदी आदी सानो छ दा नेपाल मै पढेर पछी चाँही बिदेश पढ्न जानु भए पछी उतै हराउनु भएको छ । तपाईं पनि त्यसरी नहराउनुस् है !
उसो त उतै बसेर यता (नेपाल ) को लागि ठोस् योगदान हुन सक्छ भने त्यो पनि राम्रै हो ।
अन्त मा , तपाईं बाट नेपाल आमाले धेरै आश गरेकी छि न् बिश्ब जि ।

It’s so nice to know abt Antarctica.. I am very interested in geology and astronomy… I went through your programs blog and found it quite informative.. Though, from any means or for any mission you are there.. But I salute you frm my heart to give such information about dead world (Antarctica)for us who can’t go personally there…

The Antarctic ozone hole is an area of the Antarctic stratosphere in which the recent ozone levels have dropped to as low as 33% of their pre-1975 values. The ozone hole occurs during the Antarctic spring, from September to early December, as strong westerly winds start to circulate around the continent and create an atmospheric container. Within this polar vortex, over 50% of the lower stratospheric ozone is destroyed during the Antarctic spring.[15]
As explained above, the overall cause of ozone depletion is the presence of chlorine-containing source gases (primarily CFCs and related halocarbons). In the presence of UV light, these gases dissociate, releasing chlorine atoms, which then go on to catalyze ozone destruction. The Cl-catalyzed ozone depletion can take place in the gas phase, but it is dramatically enhanced in the presence of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs).[16]
These polar stratospheric clouds form during winter, in the extreme cold. Polar winters are dark, consisting of 3 months without solar radiation (sunlight). Not only lack of sunlight contributes to a decrease in temperature but also the polar vortex traps and chills air. Temperatures hover around or below -80 °C. These low temperatures form cloud particles and are composed of either nitric acid (Type I PSC) or ice (Type II PSC). Both types provide surfaces for chemical reactions that lead to ozone destruction.[citation needed]
The photochemical processes involved are complex but well understood. The key observation is that, ordinarily, most of the chlorine in the stratosphere resides in stable “reservoir” compounds, primarily hydrochloric acid (HCl) and chlorine nitrate (ClONO2). During the Antarctic winter and spring, however, reactions on the surface of the polar stratospheric cloud particles convert these “reservoir” compounds into reactive free radicals (Cl and ClO). The clouds can also remove NO2 from the atmosphere by converting it to nitric acid, which prevents the newly formed ClO from being converted back into ClONO2.
The role of sunlight in ozone depletion is the reason why the Antarctic ozone depletion is greatest during spring. During winter, even though PSCs are at their most abundant, there is no light over the pole to drive the chemical reactions. During the spring, however, the sun comes out, providing energy to drive photochemical reactions, and melt the polar stratospheric clouds, releasing the trapped compounds.[citation needed]
Most of the ozone that is destroyed is in the lower stratosphere, in contrast to the much smaller ozone depletion through homogeneous gas phase reactions, which occurs primarily in the upper stratosphere.[citation needed]
Warming temperatures near the end of spring break up the vortex around mid-December. As warm, ozone-rich air flows in from lower latitudes, the PSCs are destroyed, the ozone depletion process shuts down, and the ozone hole closes.

बहा हरु जस्तो बिद्यार्थी हरु बाट साच्चै नै हाम्रो नेपाल ले धेरै नै आश गरेको छ । जती पनि मुलुकका सछ्यम योग्यता भएका हरु को योग्यता बिदेशी भूमिमा नै खर्चिएको पाएका छौ हामीले । ( धेरै नै अर्थात मुलुकको आवश्यकता को पूर्ती कहिल्यै हुन पाएन । हेर्नुस् न ! महाबिर पुन जि हरु कत्ती थोरै हुनुहुन्छ नेपाल मा । जब कि सुन्न मा आए अनुसार एक से एक नेपाली प्रतिभा बान हरु छन बिदेश मा । पैसाको कारण ले बिदेशिले बहाहरुको राम्रो सदुपयोग गरेको छसाथइ प्राबिधिक सामाग्री को कारण पनि होला , तर पनि गज्जब को उदा हरण त महाबिर पुन जि नै हुनुहुन्छ नि । मुलुक प्रती अत्यन्तै जिम्मेबार हुने हरु महाबिर पुन हुन सक्ने रहेछन त ! )
यही पिर ले मैले पहिल्यै हाम्रो देश को गौरब यि बैज्ञानिक बिद्यार्थी बिश्ब जि लाई ‘ तपाईंको पढाई – उद्देश्य पूरा भए पछी नेपाल फर्किनुस् है ! ‘ भनेर अनुरोध गरेर लेखेकी ।

प्रतिभा बान ब्यक्तिहरुको अभाब मा मुलुक सधैं प छौ टे नै भ ई रहेको हुन्छ ।
भारत – चाइ ना अगाडि बढेको प्रतिभा बान ब्यक्तिहरु ले गर्दा नै हो ।
