    Yes , many different opinion about Mt.Everest.No wonder Chinese and even Taiwanese schools are teaching in thier elementry schools about Mt Everest is belong to china.Very interesting thing is that i am teaching in a same way even i am nepali.I was being “KAG KO HUL MA BAKULLA” for many times but we must be sure that MT everest is belong to nepal and controlled by nepali government which chinese government knows the past history and they are not going to say any single words and never try to go against such question so we must follw and see the reality with legally proof….mr devkota taiwan

    In 2002, the Chinese People’s Daily newspaper published an article making a case against the continued use of the English name for the mountain in the Western world, insisting that it should be referred to by its Tibetan name. The newspaper argued that the Chinese name preceded the English one, as Mount Qomolangma was marked on a Chinese map more than 280 years ago.[3]

17. It’s a good issue. Let me tell something of my experience on it.
    When I came here in beijing, it gave me huge surprise and anger to know that many chinese don’t know where Nepal lies. Not only Nepal, many chinese don’t know about many other smaller countries and their geographic locations. China itself is another world, with 1.3 billions people and moreover for last more than 50 years, the state has commnunist rule and people were like isolated from rest of world. All the text books are written based on central government communist policies. Some provinces like Tibet, Xinjiang(far western province) are far from Beijing and it’s no surprise they don’t get big attention from state. Some of my chinese friends told me since childhood their only job was to study and study for 18hours…18hours everyday and no weekends. To enter university is the biggest dream of all ordinary chinese family. Therefore study and get high exam scores are the most important for all chinese chidren. And soceity and parents and even state encourage those who have good exam marks, absolutely no time to play (i used to be very surprised to see chinese learn to play football n other sports in university), luxury(i mean entertain) like us. So chinese themselves say to score high in exams, noone can beat them. They are used to it. But for other things like GK (General Knowledge), creative things, they can’t compete. And many times, they don’t care about these. Like in nepal, for most of young generation US is the dream land. With such rapid development recently, China doesn’t look and care other countries in the world except US. So now I don’t feel shocked when they say they don’t know where nepal lies, but try to explain them. Everyone seems to be interested in bright and developed countries. I know many of us also don’t know many smaller or poor countries across the world, and we don’t bother at all.
    Chinese have their own way of thinking and lifestyle, many times exactly opposite to what we have or seen. We here only can “When in Rome, Do as Romans Do”. And about Mt Everest, I have found some chinese who say it’s between two countries and symbolizes our friendship. To my limited knowledge, it’s true also. When we look into the map, it lies in the border, therefore sourthern part is of nepal and northern part is of Tibet(China). I don’t know exactly the history and politics on Everest. But there are other chinese who say it lies in China and belongs to them, with those no way to discuss.

18. ** Mt Everest, Chomolungma or Sagarmatha ? **

    Mt Everest was the name given by British after they found the highest peak while they were conducting land Survey in India. At that time they did not know it had a local name for this majestic peak. It was also wrong for BP Koirala to name this peak as Sagarmatha when shoud have consulted the local people. The local ethnic people Sherpas and Bhutias who are living ages on the base of this peak still call it Chomolungma. The correct name should be “CHOMOLUNGMA” and it must be brought to world stage and replace Mt Everest by its original name.

    The peak is divided into two countries and we can not change it now but every time we say, we must say the peak is divided between Nepal and Tibet. Tibet was invaded by Chinese communist in 1959 and annexed it into China’s territory. We should not accept this at any cost. Let Tibetians have their rights to make this country free from Chinese dominance. One day Tibetians will get freedom back. Freedom to Tibet.

    This is a very interesting topic to discuss. While in the University I happened to talk to a friend about Mt.Everest. I told him it belongs to Nepal. To my surprise my another friend from mainland China interupted and told me that it belongs to China. Then we started discussing about the border problems that existed before China took over Tibet etc. etc. From the primary school we have been taught that Mt. Everest belongs to Nepal. Similarly my chinese friend was also taught in the school that it belongs to China. Now who is right?

    Before China took over Tibet Nepal never had to worry about the border problem. It was almost like a “no man’s land” kind of hostile territory with very few scattered settlements and pastureland in the high altitudinale valleys. It was a open border between Tibet and Nepal. The actual demarcation line never existed. Later on after China took over Tibet, Nepal had a very hard time in settling the border dispute and one of the area was Mt. Everest.

    Later on I found out that the actual demarcation line now agreed upon by Nepal and China passes through the top of Everest which means top of Everest belongs to Nepal and China as it is the point of demarcation line.This means China doesn’t need nepalese permission to climb Mt.Everest from Tibetside. Likewise Nepal doesn’t need chinese permission to climb Mt.Everest from Nepal side. Is this the fact? Does anybody have a better idea how the demarcation line goes?

    Mt. Everest belongs to Nepal. There is no doubt about it. Your Chinese friend is wrong. The problem of Mt. Everest controversy was solved in 1960 during the Prime MInistership of B.P. Koirala in Nepal.

    Mt. Everest was disputed by China during the state visit of Chinese Premier Zhou En-Lai in 1960. B.P. disagreed. Zhou tried to outmanoever B.P. by asking that if it belongs to Nepal it must have its own name suggesting that in China it is called Chomolongma(in Tibetan). It was a very shrewed question, indeed, because Nepal had no name of its own in Nepali. Somehow, B.P. advisor’s came up with the name “Sagarmatha” and quieted the Chinese. Zhou En-Lai then proposed to settle this controversy by going through the historical records of expeditions. The records showed that the climbers had taken permission from Nepal while climbing from the southern side and from Tibet while climbing from the northern side. As the top of the Everest is bent towards Nepal it was decided that southern slope and the top belonged to Nepal while the northern slope belonged to China (Tibet).

    I hope this helps to understand the controversy.

    Very interesting.

    First of all, you say to Gopal Dongol that “Your Chinese friend is wrong” and then go on to say that the northern slope belonged to China (Tibet).

    Clarify what he is wrong at. Does China still need a permissions from Nepal to climb Chomolungma from the northern slope?

    Indeed, it was very smart of Zhou to have asked this “shrewd question” as you mentioned. However, in my reading, those advisers in the Nepali side do not get high marks. It is not surprising that the advisers accompanying BP did not know what the people living in the Himalayan range actually called the Everest. It is called Chomolungma for years perhaps since the time they saw the snow piled up on the top.

    Your saying “because Nepal had no name of its own in Nepali” is not only full of prejudices but also shows perciptible ignorance about the ethnic groups living in and around the Chomolungma region. May I ask, sir, which Nepal are you referring to when you say “Nepal had no name of its own…”? Had there been anyone in the group of advisers belonging to an ethnic group near and dear to the Chomolungma, or if the advisers had cared to consult the locals, this situation would not have arisen.

    We should not allow a situation where a politician or an armchair diplomat/bureaucrat during a talk could not tell you a Nepali name (yet to be defined) for a hilltop or a village, say in Mustang or Dolpo, which he will take as a right to (re)name it to claim it. Ask the locals if you are so damn ignorant about it.

    FYI, Chomolungma, a beautiful name, indeed,which is very much embodied into the daily life of people living in that range. It is in their daily worship, happiness, hardship, aspirations and above all an eternal source of inspirations.

    Dear Mr. Dongol,

    To make it short,

    Yes, it belonged to Nepal. but not anymore.

    I think this is the condition,

    King Mahendra, as a condition of supporting the Panchayati regime, signed a friendship treaty with China. That time Tibet was already in China. Then we revised the boarder in late seventees. China gave ‘generously’ some part of land which now falls mainly in Karnali and Dhaulagiri zone. And to return this generosity, Nepal also gave some portion of land, ‘which was not accessible for administration from Nepalese side’. Most of the land were given in the eastern sector. With this arragement, the teritorry was increased to 147 thousand square kilometers from 141,000. But the point is, when Nepal gave the land, it gave the other half of Mt. Everest. Now, Chinese say, Chomolongma is in China and we say Sagarmatha is in Nepal. Both are right, but Mount Everest is divided. I am sure you will get my point here. China does not say Sagarmatha is in China. The only good part on Nepal side is, since it was discovered from the Nepalese side and is more accessible from Nepalese side, it is more popular as the Nepalese peak in the whole world.

    Never mind, our politicians have sold Kanchanjunga too, after Sikkim’s accession to India.

Actually it was PM BP Koirala who agreed that Everest lies on the border with China in 1960 in his visit to China.In his Agreement with Mao, he said that it was a symbol friendhip between the great people of Nepal and even greater people of democratic People’s Republic China.We should read the history first and then blame someone. I am not defending King Mahendra here but now a days, if someone fails down from the bi-cycle also, it is the fault of Monarchy.

    By the way have you read the statement of Maoists KB Mahara on the execution of Saddam ? I laughed continuously for half an hour.Maoists were talking about human rights!!!!! Which human rights they are talking about ? Human rights of killing 13000 Nepalese by third degree methods and more gruesome than Saddam’s hanging.Only difference is that Saddam’s hanging was guided by Americans.

30. This topic is absolutely right. Last month i google it to find out about everest. I didn’t see any article saying it lies in nepal. Most article said it is in the border between Nepal and China. Wikipedia says the tip of the everest lies on china. I watched the pictures from google earth. It is hard to say which side it belongs.I am no surprised that 99% of world believe in everest lies in china.It is because of china’s global super power and some stupid politicians back in Nepal. Hey don’t worry. Nepalese are world renowed for protesting and vandalising. They protest 365 days out of 365. Why not we send those mass of protester to UN headquarte and Beijing? I tell you what that will be suicidal because the protesters will hide in US for better livings. I don’t know what to do.

    I had a hot discussion with some chinese people and chinese professors regarding this matter. You can convince some chinense, but it is impossible to convince the ocean of chinese people and rest world. This matter should be solved in diplomatic way.. But, is there any bold NETA in Nepal to raise this issue?

    हिजो राजा सुरा र सुन्दरी मा मस्त्,नेता हरु घुस् खान मस्त्,विद्यार्थी तोड्,फोड मा व्यासत्,कर्मचारी कहिले जाला घाम्,पत्रकार लाई पोइल गा को समाचार लेख्दै ठीक,तरुनी हरु मिस्स् नेपाल को तयारीमा,बुढी हरुलाई आर्का को कुरा काट्दै ठीक्क,केटा केटी हरु पापा मा मस्त्,उमेश्जी माइ संसार मा ब्यस्त ।अनी कस्ले सोच्ने सगरमाथा को बारेमा??
