  5. hello umesh ji,
    Where are u lost?
We are pretty much worried not to have chance to read updated words from u.
R u really sick after having Korean food or you wanna disappear as many of the so called famous Nepali artists, journalists, players and intellectuals usually do when they have got the opportunity to go to the countries like Korea, Japan, USA and so on?
Looking forward to reading the reason asp.

  6. Umesh jee,
Korea is not bad place as you wrote. What I infere that the hotel is wrost one where you are staying. I had been once in that hotel and in my experience of staying in hotel abraod, President hotel is wrost one ever I have stayed. If you want to enjoy staying in Korea, please change the hotel if budget contraints allow you, or atleast request some nepalese to stay with them for few days. That would be a good oppurtunity for you to learn the Korean culture.
    Cheers,
    express_gaizin from Japan.

  7. Umesh ji
its funny to say u feel uncomfortable in such a beautiful country.Korea is more beautiful and devolping country rather than Our Country.Might be you don’t like those foods smell.Because u haven’t got test it.Don’t be scary to pay a money for those smelly food. When u get test .You will know how is Korean food. It’s much delicious rather than smosha. …

  10. It is nothing but a cultural shock.

The term, culture shock, was introduced for the first time in 1958 to describe the anxiety produced when a person moves to a completely new environment. This term expresses the lack of direction, the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate. The feeling of culture shock generally sets in after the first few weeks of coming to a new place.

We can describe culture shock as the physical and emotional discomfort one suffers when coming to live in another country or a place different from the place of origin. Often, the way that we lived before is not accepted as or considered as normal in the new place. Everything is different, for example, not speaking the language, not knowing how to use banking machines, not knowing how to use the telephone and so forth.

The symptoms of cultural shock can appear at different times. Although, one can experience real pain from culture shock; it is also an opportunity for redefining one’s life objectives. It is a great opportunity for leaning and acquiring new perspectives. Culture shock can make one develop a better understanding of oneself and stimulate personal creativity.

    Symptoms:
    Sadness, loneliness, melancholy
    Preoccupation with health
    Aches, pains, and allergies
Insomnia, desire to sleep too much or too little
Changes in temperament, depression, feeling vulnerable, feeling powerless
Anger, irritability, resentment, unwillingness to interact with others
Identifying with the old culture or idealizing the old country
    Loss of identity
Trying too hard to absorb everything in the new culture or country
    Unable to solve simple problems
    Lack of confidence
    Feelings of inadequacy or insecurity
Developing stereotypes about the new culture
    Developing obsessions such as over-cleanliness
    Longing for family
Feelings of being lost, overlooked, exploited or abused

    Stages of Culture Shock
Culture shock has many stages. Each stage can be ongoing or appear only at certain times. The first stage is the incubation stage. In this first stage, the new arrival may feel euphoric and be pleased by all of the new things encountered. This time is called the “honeymoon” stage, as everything encountered is new and exciting.

Afterwards, the second stage presents itself. A person may encounter some difficult times and crises in daily life. For example, communication difficulties may occur such as not being understood. In this stage, there may be feelings of discontent, impatience, anger, sadness, and feeling incompetence. This happens when a person is trying to adapt to a new culture that is very different from the culture of origin. Transition between the old methods and those of the new country is a difficult process and takes time to complete. During the transition, there can be strong feelings of dissatisfaction.

The third stage is characterized by gaining some understanding of the new culture. A new feeling of pleasure and sense of humor may be experienced. One may start to feel a certain psychological balance. The new arrival may not feel as lost and starts to have a feeling of direction. The individual is more familiar with the environment and wants to belong. This initiates an evaluation of the old ways versus those of the new.

In the fourth stage, the person realizes that the new culture has good and bad things to offer. This stage can be one of double integration or triple integration depending on the number of cultures that the person has to process. This integration is accompanied by a more solid feeling of belonging. The person starts to define him/herself and establish goals for living.

The fifth stage is the stage that is called the “re-entry shock.” This occurs when a return to the country of origin is made. One may find that things are no longer the same. For example, some of the newly acquired customs are not in use in the old culture.

These stages are present at different times and each person has their own way of reacting in the stages of culture shock. As a consequence, some stages will be longer and more difficult than others. Many factors contribute to the duration and effects of culture shock. For example, the individual’s state of mental health, type of personality, previous experiences, socio-economic conditions, familiarity with the language, family and/or social support systems, and level of education.

    How to Fight Culture Shock
The majority of individuals and families that immigrate from other countries have the ability to positively confront the obstacles of a new environment. Some ways to combat stress produced by culture shock are:
    Develop a hobby
Don’t forget the good things you already have!
Remember, there are always resources that you can use
Be patient, the act of immigrating is a process of adaptation to new situations. It is going to take time
Learn to be constructive. If you encounter an unfavorable environment, don’t put yourself in that position again. Be easy on yourself.
    Don’t try too hard.
Learn to include a regular form of physical activity in your routine. This will help combat the sadness and loneliness in a constructive manner. Exercise, swim, take an aerobics class, etc.
Relaxation and meditation are proven to be very positive for people who are passing through periods of stress
Maintain contact with your ethnic group. This will give you a feeling of belonging and you will reduce your feelings of loneliness and alienation
Maintain contact with the new culture. Learn the language. Volunteer in community activities that allow you to practice the language that you are learning. This will help you feel less stress about language and useful at the same time.
Allow yourself to feel sad about the things that you have left behind: your family, your friends, etc.
Recognize the sorrow of leaving your old country. Accept the new country. Focus your power on getting through the transition.
Pay attention to relationships with your family and at work. They will serve as support for you in difficult times.
Establish simple goals and evaluate your progress.
Find ways to live with the things that don’t satisfy you 100%.
Maintain confidence in yourself. Follow your ambitions and continue your plans for the future.
If you feel stressed, look for help. There is always someone or some service available to help you. You may want to check out Information and Resources.

  11. by the way Umesh ji, getting free connection at air is sometime at some place could be illigal too; and it could be security issue too, so, it’s not good ideas to logged on sensitive things like bank accout, Credit card accout etc.

  12. It looks like that Umesh Ji face hardtime at Korea and when he express his feeling, Neplese over there become ofended from this. well, I also came across with loooots of Koreans at US, almost 80% of them is stubborn nature, manner-less and selfish. They hate Japanese soooo much I’ll thell this story some other day. Eventhough, I’m not completely jump in the concolution but ofcource- some suspiciality will be there. and definitely, they are growing prosper country, but it doesn’t mean that people and culture at prosper countries always good; and we must accept that.

As we are all aware of the fact that it will take time to accomstomed to the place and surroundings once we leave the native place where one spend half of his or her life. we are human and our brain acts in a way how computer software works and it responds. We are guided by whats in our brain already. I hope blogger will get soon used to liking food and environment where he resides currently. I wish him good luck and bring good things back to Nepal.

Frequency of our brain is very very large. Therefore, to read bloggers article in this blog does seem unusual.

I know chinese and korean they put a liquid on their food, which gives very bad smell. I have had gone through this once. Our whole hostel was badly smelling one day. we checked what caused such a bad smell we found one of chinese firends was cooking curry and it was from there.

Perception and life they are quite amazing things sometime create ugly envents.

    jai corruption free Nepal.

  15. Please, do respect to the cuisines of that country. Every corner of the world has different types of foods and they are as beloved as their nation. Please, mind to your language. Durgandhit is used to rotten and decayed. U might not like any taste and aroma. But it does not mean that they are notoious. I have been Korea several times and I like their foods. Try to get rid of mentality of hatred. World is being global village. Nepali khana ra parikar haru nikai ramra ra pyara chhan, tara Korean khana pani kum chhainan. God bless U and prevent U from using bad words like Indian to Koreans. Best of LUck. I wish U great success of your trip. Enjoy the moments.

  18. First timer,

I felt the same when I came to America for the first time. It is the first time that matters. But you know when I first came to the city and roads and buses I felt the same. So it is the first time phenomena. Don’t lose yourself you will win everything else. I have seen that in your articles. And I am sure you will.

  19. Great experience I would call it, Umeshji. World is too big and diverse if one is tangled within his/her own periphery and it is too small and familiar if one tries to widen up his/her horizon. It is upto only you to decide how small/big you want to make it.

    All the best

  20. umeshjee,

  21. Umesh is a representative of typical Nepali. As there is a saying, “tanna bhoj free ma khako nepali le achar ma nun charko thyo—bhanera comment garchha””.

But here in Korea, nobody blame about the food even in restaurent. “Really delicious and I’m full” is a very common whatever they like it or not.

As told by Rambhakta and others, respect others and get respect from them.

  22. Dear Umesh Ji

  23. Mr Umesh Je,
Be smart don’t be over smart, I was in Korea 1998 like you 14 days, but korea is too clean city, what do you think, how is our country nepal, i think this is your first visit, you never seen like korea clean city, try to visit other countries also, then you will feel easy to live clean country.

  25. I respect Umesh for his frankness and clear expression of his feeling. Of course, we should not disrespect others good and culture and we need to show respects towards them. As Umesh is our man, he is allowed to express his feelings freely and without any diplomatic toppings in his blog.

Enjoy it and try to embrace the new culture. Best of luck!!!

  27. Hi! Umesh ji!

I was confused first when I saw your title ‘Durgandit khana’. If I am right Durgandit means- those foods which were rotten or spoiled. But while reading I could guess what you mean to say.

I can imagine your experience which I faced also when I was studying at AIT, Bangkok and my first day at Bangkok where one can smell all those spices and sea foods which smells so bad. But, Umsesh ji trust me if you stay for more days (1-2 years you will love to eat them and the smells it gives.

Any way wish you a fruitful stay there.

  28. Hi Tul Bogatiji !
Are you from Myagdi Ratne chour ? Coz i had friends from there When i studied in PN Campus Pokhara if not sorry and pls ignore it >Then sorry if you are pls send me an email [email protected]
I am DB Gurung from Parbat now in Hongkong.

  29. No country on this earth is a paradise. On the other hand, ‘durgandhit’ is certainly not a proper word to describe any country’s dish, even if you are in a bad mood and even if it’s in your personal blog. Unless you consider yourself in the same category as your so-called foul-mouthed Indian colleague.
Hope I have not offended you.

  30. Hey hey……….
    Umesh jee….

I like Korean food very much…..
They have really vatieties of foods……
    I always take Korean foods……
    Don’t take negatively……
Their food is balanced…n …..Nowadays young Koreans seem healthier and taller…..

  31. I do see the word “durgandhit” does not fit here. It actually stands for food that is not filt hygencially. But its not the case. Its the smell and taste that appears horrible for nepalese taste buds. “When in Rome do as Romans do”.

    त्यसैले उमेशजी be positive. Mood off नगर्नुहोला। कलम चलाउनोस्। तपाईंको ब्लग कुरेर बसेका तपाईंका फ्यानहरु धेरै छन्।
    so, best of luck.

  35. Finally you arrived here in Korea. Of course, it is hard to have Korean food in the begining days but by time goes on you will start to like it. Same thing had happened to me as well. In the first time I was about to vomit but now I like it very much. Your word “Durgandhit” really make me sad. You should learn to respect other culture and their fooding behaviour. Will you take easily if some foreigner told that Neplali food is Durgandhit? Of course not. So I think as a journalist you need to learn about how to adjust in a new environment. Your image depends on how you perceive the things. Every coin has two side but you need to know which side is stronger and influencial. Take it easy and everything will be ok. Have wonderful moments ahead.

    K.C Everest from Korea

  36. rambhakta dai, thik bhannu bho tapaile, kunai nationko, community ko khanalai ‘durgandha’ bhannu ramro hoina. jaha samma used to hune kura ho, tespachhi ta ramrai hunchha. ajha, specifically korean food ko kura garn ho bhane ta, yo nikai nutricious hunchha- you can see their face is clean and no korean is fat.

lala Umesh daju………..tapailai chitta nabujeko kura lekheko thikai ho, akhirma tapai yata dherai basne pani ta hoina ni ma jasto two years jati, naya naya khanako, thauko, manchheko, experience linuhosh ani januhosh.

  37. It is sad to know, how you are experiencing Korea. I have also been to there .I dont think that food is as bad, you are saying…..now. For example: Most famous Korean dish is Khimchi…….which is similar to Nepali Food(Sinki ko achar)……isn’t.Than you can try that…… You can choose best out of every food there. It is good to enjoy Korea and your conference and learn there culture and the food …..Rather than to stay in panic. As everyone in this world have there own culture and tradition …so respect them.
Anyway, enjoy your trip over there.

  39. Yeah the same thing happened to me when i came to Korea a few months ago and now iam getting used to it. Frustration especially in this country arises because of the mindset of Korean towards nepali. they don’t care about other countries peoples except the americans. They think that americans are everything and everybody else are nothing.

At least the yankees tought them that while making them slaves in their own country

  40. Korean food is smelled bad by us in the first taste but we get familiar with it soon . Enjoy with all these , so call”bad scented “during ur stay in korean . I heard there r restaurant open by nepali in seoul . Try to get that to taste nepali food.
enjoy ur stay in korea with new experience n fun……….
    sarita

  41. umesh ji its funny to read that u feel uncomfortable in such a beautiful and nice country….well about the smell its the same for a foreigner hen he left his native and comes to another country he feel quite strange for a few days but once you have been habitate then might be u will be ok.Compare to our nepal ,korea is very clean and civilized, u will hardly see some garbage thrown on the roadside improperly like in our country……anyway i wish u all the best for ur seminar and hope u will enjoy korea stay.
    take care

( I dont have access to unicode and internet connection right now, but it seems you guys are taking wrong intrepretation of my word watavaran (environment) I will try to describe it later- Umesh)

  42. Dear Umesh,

Please do not curse the food until it is noteatable. U have to respect and understand the worlds culture, food and environment.Try to eat those food and give compliments to the chef through waiter. U are in very developed country so learn and admire the new things. we donot want to hear and read any frustrated and negative news.Good luck.

    redeemer

(Again, This is not a news site, it’s a blog. I am just expressing my feeling when I was in bad mood. Try to understand that. Thanks !- Umesh)

  43. oh nice.. this is simple umesh bro..
maybe u know that chinese food is the world’s best food… but we Nepali really hate chinese food… but they love indian food ..but indian food is the world’s worst food ever.. coz indian food have verry high amount of fat, sugar, pirro, more salty, more spicy…… for one two days indian food is delicious but afterward u can’t digest food anymore… exactly chinese, korean and japanese food are antagonist.. that means… at initially these fooods are not delicious… but when u frequently eat these food then u will get delicious.. but it takes more than 2,3 months to adapt for that foods….
so umesh bro lai ni tyastai vako ho.. new place ho… yadi umesh bro 2,3 months korea mai basne ho vane… ani korean food.. korean food vandai barbaraunuhunchha ni….
at last .. best of luck and have a nice journey and conferenc…

  44. it is natural if you are testing an alien food first time. But it does not mean that it is DURGANDHIT. Generally same happens for foreigner if they test our food for the first time.

Tesaile if you test the same food for several time then only you tongue will able to get some test and eventually we will be fine with korian food.

    samaya

  45. Well, whatever they have developed, it is the fact that one can smell bad odor at any corner of the street from drainage.. its quite starnage why they did not do anything to stop that bad odor. (I guess Umeshji is talking about that bad smell). About food, may be that is also bad smell as their food is quite different than us, but it is definetely not a “durgandit khana” as we used to say for old and dirty food.

  46. Isn’t it a little bit impolite to use such a strong word like “durgandhit” for the food which someone else find as delicacy. Every country has its own cultuer, life style and food. Travelling to a new country not only means sightseeing but it means embracing this new culture as a whole. It is not necessary that we like everything of a new place in an instant, however, it is our moral responsibility to respect their culture, food and lifestyle. The problem is never with the food, the problem is with our taste buds. We are not accustomed to new taste, and hence we find it strange. But in the mean time we should not forget that some people in this world enjoys eating that very same food. Any Nepali would be very much offended if some foreigner disrespect our dal-vat. For sure they do find our dal-vat strange, but yet we expect them to praise it. I think it goes same for the food from other countries as well.

And while travelling to a new place, it is always better to keep an open mind. Things for sure are much different than back in our home country. But isn’t that why we travel after all – to learn about new culture, new lifestyle including their food.

  47. hahaha….malai pani yaha (Israel ma ) indian ko boli sunda, dikka lag chha. k garnu sathi vanne uhi ho. afai bigrela vanne dar..! Every sentence ma tyo mix nagare, complete vaya jastai lagdaina re..!sathilai ta.

  51. Umesh Ji,
I do not understand what do you mean, do you like the polluted, dirty and dusty environment of Kathmandu? When I was in Korea for three months in 2004, I liked it and enjoyed a lot. Korea is developing with faster growth rate. If you see the 50 years back history of Korea, it was ranked as same as Nepal. I do not see the vast difference in the level of development between the United States and South Korea. Please, tell the Nepalese leaders to learn from Korea and other developed countries and work for the Nation.
