  3. hi ZZ,
I had actually surveyed few of the companies developing solar power in nepal just out of interest. There has been a great push towards rural electrification thru solar energy. But its of course feasible in cities too and there is no running cost. The problem can be from the battery at times though.
You need to have seperate connection for it.I think if u spend 15000 you can get a decent solar power system to light 4-5 bulbs and a radio or TV.You can visit the companies and learn it there. They have brochures with the costs too from which u can compare cost vs benifit for yourself. The pioneering company in Nepal is Lotus energy, there are many others too.
I am returning to Nepal after a month and first thing i will do to install a solar plant in my house and i will definately write about the experience in merosansar.
By the way,ZZ please dont cut the bidhyut pradhikaran line as yet,you will need it for all the high energy consuming gazets like ur refrigerator, oven, toaster, iron, washing machine.

  4. Human,

it seems you have good knowledge about energy sector of Nepal, its past and present. can you give some technical details about the solar panel, battery capacity, actual energy supply capacity and running cost?

Being too disturbed by the load-sheddings, I am thinking to buy a diesel generator for home, but if your information is true, I will consider cutting of Bidhyut Pradikaran line and install 2 sets of solar pannels. Is it possible to use ordinary domestic wiring for the solar powered supply?

In terms of cost, it will cost 16000, but then, provide free electricity throughout the year, right? If they serve 5 years without problem, then the cost per month will reach around 270.00 Rs. Hmmm, a bit expensive. But it is ok, they will provide hassle free electricity always.

If this simple techno-economics works, then most urban population will switch to solar power and will punish BiPra for their irresponsible treat to their consumers.

  5. There are many studies for different size hydropower projects and their commercializtion since many years. It may not be right time to repeat the similar mistakes again. This could be a very right time to correct the root cause of hindering a beautiful nation from develpment and prosperty. The democracy might work in generating electricity too. I don’t see any other possible solution of bringing green energy to the capital and villages of all the district of nation.

  6. Unfortunately the nation is in a critical situation due to the rooting of autocracy. The deficiency of electricity in the capital is the result ofthe root cause. So, if you ask for the solution, you have to think for the root cause. All Nepalese should be aware of the root cause and aware of their right.

  8. Achyut jee
Its nice to see that we are discussing something other than politics. What I mean to say is that there are fesibility studies done for small or medium sized projects…which is good to implement but if we talk about mega projects u need to assess financial and environmental risk…and some of the experts like Deepak Gyawali and others argue that those risks overweighs benefits…and other important thing is market….I am sure after this nuclear deal India will be less interested in purchasing hydropower in future…another point is that it takes very long time to construct big hydropower projects….so my view is that we should go for building small to medium sized hydropower projects for our use rather than dreaming about exporting hydropower…..

  9. Rakesh ji,

I know of several feasibility study projects that had been carried out to judge the potential of hydropower plants in nepal. Moreover, due to steepness of waterfall and due to this type of geography, Nepal does have good future of hydropower. http://www.visitnepal.com/nepal_information

But I also agree with you some parts

Lets think and discuss about the present crisis of electricity and how can a household get rid of it.I think this is why this thread was started.
I really empathise on people like achuyt ji,please know what is going on before giving a big lecture.
Nepal already is a leading country in Biogas. We are actually entitled to millions of rupees for its good environmental effects. There has been many documentaries on how other poor countries can learn from nepal’s success.
Ethanol is not a wonder concept of americans, brazil actually has mastered it.Brazil currently has more than 50% of its car running on ethanol. They are known as flexi cars which can run on both fossil fuel and ethanol.I think it can be very useful in nepal also but we have to have the compatible engines installed, which will take some time.
Nepal is also a pioneering country in electric vehicle.I read an interview by the manufacturer of REVA the electric car made in india. He said his target market is concious cities like kathmandu where there already are more than 500 electricity driven vehicles. We need to have more of them.
Tony Hegan the great friend of Nepal always used to say that we need to invest in small hydropower plants and we have done that as well.Nepal actually exports turbines for the small hydropower plants to other countries and there has been tremendious growth on it in Nepal itself. This can be done at the local level and will bring a sea of change.
There is a research going on in Kathmandu University about a new efficient type of WINDMILL,a world renouned south african professor is leading the research. When they finish this will also be helpful if we can implement it in areas which are known to be windy.
There is a lot happening in Nepal and even a lot more will happen when all of us will have a positive feeling. One thing i have learnt from Americans is that,Politics is always dirty, everywhere, its the People who build a Nation.Japan has more government changes than we have, thailand has more political instability than we have but they are developed because the people are reselient. We also should be like them.It is the time to act and not to crib.

  11. hi,
Why dont we start having a solar powered light like we have in villages. It costs around 4 thousand rupees(rest 4 to be paid by gov.) and it can power few bulbs, one radio or TV.
After a month when i will be back in nepal i am definitely going to try it out.Even if the government subsidy is not there and if i want a bigger/more powerful panel/battery, i think we should be able to have 5-6 lights and a TV powered by spending around 15000 rupees.I think it can be a good idea not just during load shedding but also to save energy and save money even when we have electricity from the national grid.
I am talking about the amount from a small research that i did about a year ago.If someone has some first hand experience about it please write it here because i feel that this thing really has a good prospect.

  12. I agree with the comment given by Mr. Bhandary . As he rightly quoted that the relieving the country from autocratic monarchy and establishment of full democracy is the only way out to resolve this problem in long term .As we know all these problems are being created due to political chaos in the country .Untill and unless we have political stability with visionary government , all the measures taken will be futile . Solutions like solar system , biogas etc. can’t fullfill the huge energy demand of the country .

  13. This above comment does not seem to be trustworthy. As a physicist, I know that you can not create energy out of nothing. So, fuel-less generator sounds very absurd. If you use the energy of falling water, it is hydropower; you may very well use samll dynamos which you can easily buy in Nepal to generate electricity in small scale. It may even be a wind-powered dynamos. But generating electricity from nothing is not true. I just wanted to make aware to some people who may go ahead and spend 300$ just for a CD which may have no useful information than a rubbish.

  14. The first step to produce enough energy from our water resources is to come out of the myth of our so called water resource potential. Nobody has ever tried to judge this potential in pragmatic terms. Our topography and lack of financial resources limits this potential to great extent. we should try to develop small hydropower projects having less environmental effects and which requires less financial resources. A good and pragmatic relation with India is necessary to sell our energy. we should realize that the recent deal between India and US has great consequences. I don’t think that India is interested in our hydropower so we don’t have any market for it…and no private company is going to invest without an assured market…..so its necessary to think abou buying electricity from India which will be producing enough electricity within next decade…..Its a geopolotical compulsion to have good relation with India rather than just singing the panchayati rhetoric of anti Indianism.

  19. To quite autocratic monarchy and stablish democratic repblic Nepal is only one point solution of any of the problem in Nepal.
other solutions might be short time solution which may creat more problems in future.

  20. Every country in this world knows that Nepal is rich in its hydropower. We don’t have to search for other sources of electricity as long as we are rich in hydropower. If Nepal can capitalize it’s hydropower generation assets, then no one has to live under darkness. Moreove, electricity can be sold to neighbouring countries. I remember my prof. saying well Nepal has potential to generate lots of electricity which can boom Nepal’s economy. He further added if Nepal is not able to stabilize the political situation , then we may sometimes in future be part of india or china. And, this is fact too. Because India is hungry on nepal’s electricty and thus enforces contracts only in his favor and our stupid leaders and ministers do the contract with India even if they are aware of the fact.. just because of their personal benefits.

Voting should be done before carrying out such contracts which affects Nepal and its people. I also remeber one event in one city of USA where people are asked to vote for and against casino that is going to be established in the city. People participation was great. That’s how a real democracy works.

We have to call for bids if we don’t have financial and other resources to establish hydropower plants. And after analyzing that, we should handover the contract to that capable agency/country from which we are getting more benefit. We don’t have to blidly support india and agree with their each and every terms and conditions which seem to be harmful rather than beneficial.

Alternatively, Solar energy can be used and in some places we can promote bio-gas (generated from cow dung).

Thus, there are many ways to do this. Only an effective plan is required before implementing those. For example, electricity generation in most of the cities areas with bio-degredents (like cow-dungs) are not feasible. They are feasible in villages where people render cows and buffaloes.

Also, solar energy can be used almost in all areas of countries. But, there should be cost-benefit analysis done during feasibility study. Researches in alternative sources of energies should be encouraged. As an example, USA knows that it’s holding on fuel is going down day by day…. so, it’s trying to generate fuel called ethanol from sugarcane and corns. They have invested in it’s research and they have well planned system on how to implement this.

This is how we can work in this issue.
