I’m not sure how many ‘Udeep’ are here commenting – but I find it quite interesting that while (s)he is against my opinion in some comments, (s)he’s in full agreement on others. I’ve always had the same belief and I stick by what I believe is true. But does (s)he know his own beliefs?
Do you seriously believe using abusive words and ranting slogans against the government will help? When asked to be directly involved in peace building process these people are the first ones to back off, and yet they demand peace to be established thru a strike of a magic wand.
As civil society leaders, it should be their duty to remain NEUTRAL and work as a catalyst in speeding up the process. Declaring a date for CA elections (Udeep, the major issue isn’t the ‘referendum’, it’s the CA elections ;)) won’t help without arms management. Thru various agreements, both SPA and Maobadis have come to the same ground politically. Now, without arms management the political settlement cannot move ahead. That’s the fact. Hard as it might be to accept but, if you can, look at the scenario after the elections and Maobadi militias in the national army. We all know where the monarchy’s power lies – the military. Without cutting off this arm we can’t beat the monarchy completely. But how clever is it to replace the military with another ideology (Maobadis)? If the king used the military to remain in power, there is absolutely no guarantee that any other party who has control over them wouldn’t use it. Besides, it would be completely against the spirit of a democratic and/or republic principle to have an army loyal to one of the parties! Those who can’t even grasp this simple theory … just shouldn’t be talking politics. Even more, (s)he shouldn’t represent the ordinary people.
If a hatchet is to be buried, burn and bury it deep. Why should anyone bury the head while leaving the handle popping out of the ground? Seriously, would you ever feel safe knowing (and seeing) the handle is still sticking out, ready to pull the hatchet out again?
It was interesting to read comments. Those advocating for Shyam shrestha and against him. Everyone is free to put his/her arguments in democracy. However, advocating totalitarian system and using liberal demcratic system as just stopover by radical political figures and their supporters by disinforming public with sweet slogan but impossible to reach is what we are witnessing now. No dobt referendum is absolutely good idea to test but under the presence of psycholoigcal and even physical threats by those gun weilding people beleiving powwer only through guns, make a diffwerence and real voices are lost with fear. So if Shyam shrestha and other who are presenting themselves civial society members despite their known committment to their respective political parties and radical ideology that utlimately takes us to a one party dictatorship , are shying away to strongly advocate any wrong doings of any sides but doing against one side grossly making public to feel that they are siding to one particular
political party tand they are only begign looking face. A serious and unbiased analyst can not understand why do this when they called themselves as civil society member. Sombody above commented above that people are commenting about Shyam without really knowing him. Is it difficult in Nepal to hide their affiliation specially for those who are in lime light.
Our country can only mover ahead if we really take lession from other countries with similar events in their poltical history and also our own complex heterogenous demography, and propaget truely a plurisitc democratic system. I repeat that we must stop glorifying the torturing and killing of any fellow citizen by any side if really want to progress.
I agree with shyam jee. unlike Khus (who is afraid to hear a word REFERENDUM), i totally agree that the real voice of the people can only be heard through referendum. Kasai ko aawaz media ma charko chairahecha doesn´t mean majority of the people are supporting it. The necessary changes should be brought about through rational and statistical data.

Instead of praising the effort of nagarik smaaj, why are these people against them? Do they think Girija, KP Oli and some slaves of Gyanendra are doing the right thing?

Civil society is really beautiful if we have it in real sense. All of us know that by defintion and concept, civil society is composed of respected and morally high people in the society without biasness to any particular party or group or person, but offers themselves as regulator of formal or official leaders who run the administration or the country or parties. If we check , most of the people who are seen shouting as civil socitey memebrs are memebr of aprticular political party. How can we expect anything unbiased and pathshowing from them? Most of them are with red glass of communist ideology which always advocate and propagate rule by dictatorship in the name of poor making all poor both in term of individual freedom and property. I pity oursleves to support the dream idea of all being rich and gun culture in our society. In April revolution nepali people defeated autocratic monarchy who had massive army. People were without guns. Whether it is 2046 or 2062/63, autocratic king lost to gunless people. I can not understand why people donot talk about why maoist should keep army even after CA election? Why a n army totally committed to one party ideology and faithful to only one party should be accepted? We should not regret later . Instead we must see what cambodia, afagansithan, Rumania, Russia, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, and North Korea have got for their people during such rule? Nobody talks about it? How one can agree with killing of fellow human being be that from any body in the society, and glorifying such killing as a heoric acts. So let us open our eyes and look in the hisotry and contemporary world scene and support a truely pluristic competetive democracy where no one is afraid of guns but rules. Dear friends, saviours are always heroes than those who support killing. as long as we support and glorify the killing of any individual, our country will remain vulnerable and society degenrate. I would like to ask our mass who call themselves civil society members: Are you unbiased? Are you not a active memebr of a political party? have you not supported the cause of only your party? Have you objected killing, torturing, extortion, psychological torture by both state security and maoists equally? Have you asked maoist and government and other parties to hold human rights and should not be single killing of fellow citizen?
Let us be frank, can we call now real civil society?

The first step that we all need to see is peace in the country, this would be little bit dramatic if we talk about religion at present. It was announce clearly that everyone reserves the right of choosing a religion. This is 21st century we need freedom in every corner so I don’t agree with your agenda that Nepal to be called as a Hindu kingdom. Absupoutly not.
We never have had religious conflict in the country in past and this shouldn’t happen in future too. The best idea is to let everyone to do what he/she likes, in other words “Freedom” neither Hindu kingdom nor Christian Kingdom. Nepal to be called a freedom country.

It is indeed a misfortune for the country not to have a healthy and a dynamic leader who has a clear vision and who can understand people’s aspiration and who can lead the country at this transitional period. Instead, we had no choice but to make the frail man GP Koirala as the Prime Minister. When people are expecting so much out of his leadership and hoped that he would take initiative to declare the country ‘The Republic of Nepal” but instead he is delaying the peace process and slowing down the election to constituent assembly.
SPA leaders also should understand that people have given them the mandate to conduct the election of constituent assembly as soon as possible without delaying the peace settlement. If they have no gut to declare the Republic of Nepal, let there be referendum for the fate of the monarchy.
The corrupt monarchy institution has no place in 21 century Nepal. The history of Nepal will describe the reign of Shah Dynasty as the dark ages of Nepal. If we clearly analyse the history of Nepal, we only find the power struggle within royal families and within their cronies and too much violence. After Prithivi Narayan Shah, kings of Shah dynasty never did any patriotic acts but instead they ruined the country. They have established the feudal system in which only privileged class of people were enjoying out of state coffer while the rest were living in destitute.
The trouble now is still centred around the monarchy system. The only solution is to wipe out the monarchy institution before we can expect the bright future for the country.
